Chapter 1

Mark Callaway sat on the front porch of the cabin; his boss had sent him to. He loved the piece and solitude of the mountains. The mountains had always been someplace he would go when his life was a mess. Right now his life was such a mess he didn’t know whether he was coming or going. Since the night he’d walked in on Sara and his cousin in bed his life had been taking a dive and it was taking his career with it. Vince had given him a six-month leave of absence and offered to pay him as if he was still working. Everyone seemed to think Vince McMahon was a hard ass and a cheap skate but when it came right down to it Vince McMahon was usually the one who understood what people were going through. Mark looked up as a car drove up the long driveway and stopped. Wondering who it was Mark got up from his seat and made his way to the car. "Hi are you lost?" Mark asked the pretty brunette who stepped from the car.

"Nope, my name is Shayna McMahon. My uncle said you would be arriving today. I just wanted to stop by and see if you needed anything."

"So you’re the beautiful niece Vince talks about all the time." Mark said smiling.

"Well I don’t know about beautiful, but yes I am Vince’s niece." Shayna said blushing.

"Well I would say your uncle hit his description was right on."

"Well thank you."

"Your welcome, care for some coffee?" Mark asked.

"Coffee would be great." Shayna replied.

"Well come on in." "So did you have any trouble finding this place? It can be kind of confusing if you aren’t from this area."

"No, the directions Vince gave were great. Now if Stephanie had given them to me I would have gotten lost."

"That is true, Poor Steph has no sense of direction. She’d get lost fighting her way out of a paper bag." Shayna said laughing.

"I trust everything was to your liking when you arrived?"

"Perfect! I assume you were the one who put the groceries in the refrigerator?" Mark asked pulling down two coffee cups.

"Yes, since you weren’t going to be here until today and the grocery store is closed I knew you would be needing a few things."

"What grocery store closes on a Sunday?"

"This is a small town in the mountains Mr. Callaway, they tend to do thing half ass backwards around here."

"I take it you’re from around here then? And please call me Mark. Mr. Callaway makes me feel old.

"Alright then Mark, actually I was born and raised in Connecticut two doors down from my uncle’s house. I didn’t move to West Virginia until I got married."

"So your married."

"Divorced, three years now this past January."

"Didn’t you want to move back home?"

"No my parents aren’t living anymore and Uncle Vince and Aunt Linda aren’t around much, besides I decided to hit the cheating bastard where it hurts I took his house and I took his favorite place on earth"His cabin." Shayna said grinning.

"Touché" Mark said raising his cup in a salute.

"I didn’t want to intrude just wanted to make sure everything was okay up here. Nothing’s broken, roofs not leaking?"

"Everything is great, thanks for letting me use the place."

"Not a problem, anything for a friend of my uncle’s."

"Yeah well if it wasn’t for your uncle I probably wouldn’t have a job right now."

"Uncle Vince understands a lot more then people think he does. Aunt Linda well she’s another story. She can be a ruthless bitch when she wants to be."

"You said it not me." Mark said grinning behind his coffee cup.

"I’m allowed she’s my Aunt." Shayna said her laughter filling the room.

"So Shayna, what do you do around this sleepy little town?"

"Well I work as a receptionist part time and I raise my kid’s."

"Kids? You don’t look old enough to have kids."

"Well thank you I’ll take that as a compliment."

"How many kid’s do you have?" Mark asked glancing at her.

"Two girls, Ryan and Samantha. Ry is 6 and Samantha is 3."

"You don’t look old enough to have a 6 year old. How old are you if you don’t mind me asking."

"I just turned 33 January 15th." Shayna said with a smile.

"Same birthday as Shane."

"Yep that’s how I ended up being named Shayna, Shane is an hour older than me. Uncle Vince said if we were going to share the same birthday then we might as well share the same name my mom and dad liked it so they went with it. When we were kids people couldn’t tell if we were twins or not. Aunt Linda used to tell them yes we were we just had different mothers."

"So you and Shane were close growing up?"

"Extremely close, we still are."

"That’s good"

"So tell me about you, I know you’re a wrestler but tell me about you." Shayna said sitting back in her chair.

"Well let’s see here, I turn 41 in March, I was born and raised in Houston Texas. I’ve got a kid on the way but I’m not sure if it’s mine. Both my parents are still alive and no Glenn Jacobs is not my brother." Mark said with a shrug.

"Wait a minute back up, you have a kid on the way but you’re not sure if it’s yours?" Shayna asked.

"I caught my wife in bed with my cousin. Six months ago. She claims it just happened and it was just that time but I had heard she was seeing him for a while. Neither of them will admit it."

"That Sucks." Shayna said shaking her head.

"Yeah tell me about it, it has caused a huge rift in the family."

"Mark I’m sorry, that’s just wrong. If she was going to cheat on you she could have at least picked someone you didn’t even know."

"Yeah well Sara is Sara and she doesn’t think like normal people."

"She needs her ass kicked." Shayna said without thinking.

Mark looked at her and chuckled. "You offering your services?"

"I’m sorry I didn’t mean to say that out loud."

"No harm done, what happened is my own fault. I was gone to much and was barely home." "That is bullshit. She knew what she was getting into when she married you. If she couldn’t hack being a wrestling widow she shouldn’t have married you." "A wrestling widow?" Mark asked laughing.

"Yes, it’s what Steph and I use to call wrestling wives. Sorry." Shayna said blushing again.

"No need to be sorry I never heard them referred to that way before. But now that I think about it, that is appropriate."

"Listen I better let you get back to your piece and quiet I just wanted to stop by and introduce myself. If you need anything or just want to talk stop by, my house is the first one on the left at the end of the road that comes up here." Shayna said standing up and taking her cup to the sink and rinsing it out.
,br> "Thanks I’ll do that. Stop by anytime you feel like talking, I could use some company sometimes."

"I just might do that." Shayna said smiling as he walked her out on to the porch.

"See you around Shayna." Mark said as she got into her car. "Don’t even think about it man, she’s the boss’s niece." He said to himself as he watched her drive off.

~Chapter 2~

Three days latter Mark was going stir crazy and decided to take Shayna up on her offer of someone to talk to he drove down to her house. Just as he was about to knock her heard muffled cursing. “Hello?” he said opening the screen door. When he didn’t hear a response except for more cursing and banging he decided to investigate. Mark walked into the kitchen and leaned against the doorframe. “Need some help with that?” he asked trying to hide the grin when he saw Shayna fighting with the pipes under the kitchen sink.

Shayna was so surprised to hear a male’s voice she raised up hitting her head on the pipes.

"SONOFABITCH" she said bringing her hand to her forehead.

"OOO Mommy said a bad word." A little voice said from under the kitchen table.

"Shayna are you alright? I didn’t mean to startle you." Mark said trying not to laugh.

"I’m fine, how are you?" "Good, I got cabin fever and decided to stop by." Mark said taking in her rumpled appearance.

"Good I’m glad, want some coffee?" She asked setting the wrench on the counter.

"Sure, what’s wrong with the sink." He asked as she dried her hands off.

"It’s clogged and I can’t get the pipe undone."

"Here let me give it a try." Mark said shrugging out of his leather jacket.

"You don’t have to do that." Shayna said looking at him.

"Please let me do something useful, I’m going stir crazy. I have nothing but time on my hands."

"If you want to be my guest, it’ll save me from calling a plumber." Shayna teased grabbing him a coffee cup.

"Just for that I’ll be sending you bill."

"And just what do you charge Mr. Callaway?" Shayna asked pulling Samantha from underneath the table and sending her in the other room to play.

"Dinner and a movie." Mark said from under the sink.

"Why Mr. Callaway are you asking me out on a date?" Shayna asked kneeling down so she could peer inside the cupboard he was in.

"Maybe, depends on if you accept." Mark replied grinning at her.

"If you get my sink unplugged your on."

Just then the fitting came undone and water sprayed all over him soaking him from head to toe.

"OH MY GOD! Mark I’m so sorry." Shayna said dissolving into a fit of laughter as he wiped water out of his face.

"I’m charging extra." Mark said taking the towel she handed him.

This only made Shayna laugh even harder. "I’m glad you think this is so funny." He said grabbing her and getting her wet too.

"I can’t help it, you should have seen the look on your face." Shayna said covering her mouth.

"Well Ma’am your sink is unclogged isn’t it?" Mark said grinning.

"Yes it is, so when do you expect payment for services rendered." Shayna asked stepping back from him finally realizing she was in his arms.

"When ever your free, I’ve got nothing but time on my hands."

"The girls are going to their father’s till Sunday how about to night."

"Tonight it is then." Mark said smiling.

"What’s going on?" they heard from the doorway.

Shayna peered around Mark to find her ex-husband standing in the doorway. "Your early." She said hating the way he just barged into her house without knocking.

"So" Andy said.

"Mark meet Andy, Andy meet Mark." Shayna said when Andy looked at Mark questionably.

"Nice to meet you Mark, Are the girls ready Shayna, I want to get an early start to my parents."

"Yes, Samantha is in her room and Ryan is in hers. Let me go get them. Mark I’ll be right back." Shayna said leaving to go get her daughters.

"So Mark how did you meet my wife?"

"I work for her uncle." Mark said picking up his coffee cup.

"What are your intentions?"

"Excuse me? I don’t think that’s any of your business." Mark said instantly disliking him.

"I think it is, I was married to her after all."

"WAS is the operative word." Mark replied refusing to answer him.

A few minutes later Shayna came back, she kissed the girls good-bye and watched them leave with their father.

"Sorry Shayna but that guy is a jack ass." Mark said shaking his head.

"You don’t have to tell me that." Shayna said wiping up the water from the floor.

"I’m going to go back up to the cabin and change. Is 6:00 alright for dinner?" Mark asked setting his cup in the sink.

"Sounds good."

"I’ll pick you up then." "Alright and thanks for fixing my sink." "Anytime darlin’, I’ll see you in a while." Mark said walking out the back door.

Sat down at the kitchen table and sighed, she hadn’t dated in awhile and was kind of nervous. For the last three days she hadn’t been able to get him out of her mind. At the strangest moments his face would pop into her head, there was something about him that intrigued her. Maybe it was the sadness she had seen in his eyes. What ever it was it wasn’t going to go away not until she explored what it was about him that made her think of him so much.

~Chapter 3~

Mark pulled to a stop in front of the cabin and sat there for a few seconds. For the last three days, Shayna McMahon had been on his mind. No matter what he did he couldn’t shake her from his thoughts. He wondered what the boss would think if he knew he was having thoughts about his beautiful niece. Grinning he got off his bike and decided to test the waters. Pulling out his cell phone he dialed Vince.

"McMahon" Vince said answering his cell phone.

"Hey Boss, it’s Mark"
"Hey how is everything?" Vince said hearing the change in Marks voice.

"Everything is good, I just wanted to thank you for setting this up for me. It’s really helping."

"Good,Good, sometimes we just need to escape for awhile. Has my niece been up to see you yet?"

"Yes, she came up on Sunday to make sure everything was alright. As a matter of fact I just came back from her house. I stopped by to say hello and she was cussing out her sink." Mark said laughing.

"Cussing out her sink?" Vince asked.

"The sink was backed up and she couldn’t get the pipe undone. So I fixed it for her." Mark explained.

"Good, I’m glad you were around to help. That ex of hers is a real piece of work doesn’t do anything to help her out. Hell he doesn’t even pay child support."

"I met him too, wasn’t very impressed."

"How did you manage to meet that jack ass?" Vince asked.

"He stopped by to pick up the girls."

"I wish he’d just disappear. He harasses her all the time."

"What do you mean?"

"He just calls her all the time threatens to take the kids from her, like I would ever let that happen."

"I just wanted to let you know your description was right on."

"My description?"

"Yes, Shayna is beautiful, she’s sweet too."

"Ahhh do I hear interest in your voice."

"Maybe." Mark said laughing.

"Just don’t hurt her, your ass is mine if you do."

"Wouldn’t dream of it. I just wanted to let you know I made it up here alright.” “Glad you called, tell Shayna I said hello.” “Will do Vince, thanks again.” “Anytime. Talk to you soon.” Vince said as he hung up the phone. Vince let out a chuckle. “What?” Linda asked looking over at him. “Nothing, I think Mark is interested in Shayna.” “Well that’s not a bad thing. I like Mark.” Linda replied. “So do I why do you think I sent him up there and didn’t fire his ass.” Vince said winking at her. “Uhh oh those two are in trouble if your playing match maker.” Linda said giggling. Mark hung up his cell phone and entered the cabin, deciding to take a shower he walked to the back of the house and began to get undressed. Glancing at the bed a picture of Shayna entered his mind. He pictured the two of them making love. “Where the hell did that come from he asked shaking himself back to reality. Mark jumped into the shower and began to get ready for his date. He was glad Vince hadn’t been opposed to the idea of him seeing Shayna because if he had been he didn’t know what he would have done. He knew he couldn’t get her out of his system until he got to know her better. It had been a long time since he’d been out on a date. He did feel a little guilty, he still loved Sara, but she had been the one to cheat on him and they were separated. At the thought of Sara the tattoo on his throat began to tingle. Rubbing it he sighed. “Why’d you have to go and screw around?” He said out loud. Once he was finished he searched through the clothes he had brought wit him deciding on a his normal black jeans and a black button down shirt he got dressed and pulled his hair back into a ponytail. Deciding to leave a little early. Going outside he started up his bike and revved the engine. Mark looked at his watch and decided it was too early to pick Shayna up and decided to take a little ride to clear his mind. Shayna searched through her closet for the fifth time trying to decide what to wear. If she didn’t decide soon she’d be meeting Mark at the door in her bathrobe. Getting frustrated she threw a shoe in the closet and it bounced of the back wall the vibration knocking a box off the top shelf. Picking up the box she noticed that it was the outfit Stephanie had sent her for her birthday the year before. Shayna had never had anywhere to wear it to so she had stuck it on the shelf to wear the next time she went home to Connecticut. Pulling out the outfit she sighed. Leather really wasn’t her style but she was willing to try anything once and twice if she liked it. Shayna finished dressing and looked in the mirror. It was hard to believe she was looking at herself. Smiling she decided to put on a little makeup something she rarely did. Raising two kids by herself left her little time for herself. Occasionally she was blessed with enough time to pamper herself with a bubble bath but that was far and few between. Once she had applied the make up and put her hair up in French twist she grinned. This was definitely a good look for her. She hoped Mark would like it. She was just cleaning up the mess she had made in her room when she heard his motorcycle pull up. She took a deep breath and waited for the doorbell. Mark parked his bike and walked up to the front door, taking a deep breath he rang the doorbell and waited. When Shayna opened the door he couldn’t believe what he saw. In place of the jean-clad woman, mother of two he had seen earlier was one of the most beautiful women he had ever seen. “Hi Mark, come on in.” Shayna said smiling up at him. “Thanks, you look beautiful.” “Thank you, your looking pretty handsome yourself.” She said blushing at his compliment. “These are for you.” Mark said handing her the flowers he had behind his back. “Mark they are beautiful, thank you.” She said taking them and kissing him on the cheek. “Your welcome, I was ready a little early and took a drive. A woman was selling them on the side of the road.” “That would be Anna, she lives about a mile or so from here. She grows them in her flower garden.” “Very nice woman, she seemed very excited when I told her who they were for.” Mark said grinning. “Yes, Anna has been after me for the last three years to get back to the dating scene.” Shayna said laughing. “Just let me put these in water and I’ll be ready to go.” She added walking into the kitchen. Mark looked around the living room and noticed some pictures on the fire place mantle. He was looking at them when she came back. “How old were you in this picture.” Mark said picking up the picture of her and Vince. “We were about 9 there. Uncle Vince had taken Shane and I to Disney Land for our birthday.” Shayna responded smiling at the memory. “You can see how close you were. It’s a good picture of him. And you were a cute kid.” “You think so? I always thought I was awkward. I never really fit in as a kid.” Shayna said picking up a picture of her and her parents. “Whose that?” Mark asked walking up behind her. “My parents, they died when I was 16, after they died I lived with Uncle Vince and Aunt Linda until I graduated.” “You look like your dad.” Mark said hearing the pain in her voice. “I always thought so too. My dad was great he always made sure he had time for me no matter what. I guess it’s a McMahon thing because Uncle Vince was the same way with Stephanie and Shane.” Shayna said setting the picture back up on the mantle. “You make time for the important things in life, if you don’t you miss out on a lot.” Mark said quietly. “My dad would have liked you, he used to say the exact same thing.” Shayna said smiling as she grabbed her jacket. “Good because I sure like his daughter.” Mark said helping her put it on. Shayna ducked her head not knowing what to say. “Come on we’ve got dinner reservations.” “Oh yeah where are you taking me?” “It’s a surprise.” Mark said taking her hand and leading out the door. “I love surprises, I’m just wondering how you planned this all in such a short period of time.” “A little birdie helped me.” Mark said laughing as he got on the bike. “Have you ever ridden on the back of a bike before?” He asked taking her hand and helping her on. “Nope, I’m a newbie so bear with me.” Shayna said nervously. “Just wrap your arms around my waist and you see those pegs down there?” Mark asked pointing down to the foot pegs. “Yep.” “Put your feet on them.” Mark instructed. Shayna wrapped her arms around his waist and held on tight. “You scared?” Mark asked quietly. “No I trust you.” Shayna said scooting up on the seat so her breasts were pressed into his back and her thighs were touching his hips. “Good, let’s go.” Mark said reaching back and rubbing her leg. Mark could tell she was nervous because as soon as he took off she tightened her arms around his waist. He could feel the heat from her body seeping into him and he liked the feel of her body pressed against his. They drove for about twenty minutes before Mark pulled into a restaurant located in another town. “Mark, this is my favorite restaurant how did you know?” Shayna asked getting off the bike. “I told you a little birdie told me.” Mark said grinning as he took his helmet off and took hers from her hands. “That little birdie wouldn’t be named Anna would it?” “I’d tell you but then I’d have to kill you?” “You don’t play fair.” Shayna said as they walked inside. “Hello may I help you?” the hostess asked looking at them up and down. “We have a reservation under Callaway.” “Right this way Mr. Callaway, we’ve given you our best table.” “Well thank you?” Shayna said surprised. “What’s wrong?” Mark asked pulling her chair out for her. “Nothing I’m just surprised, they don’t give their best table away to just anybody.” Shayna said smiling as he sat down. “Well I think my little birdie had something to do with it.” Mark said laughing. “I’m on a mission to find out this little birdie’s name so I can thank it.” “It wishes to remain anonymous or I would tell you.” Throughout dinner Mark and Shayna talked about everything from their childhoods, loosing loved ones to the present. They were having a wonderful time until all hell broke loose. “What’s up Shayna, you out slumming?” they heard from two tables over. Shayna turned around to see Andy’s best friend sitting there. “Mike, how nice to see you.” She said sarcastically. “Gee I wonder what Andy is going to say when I tell him about this.” “ I really don’t care what Andy has to say about it, he doesn’t run my life anymore. In case you’ve forgotten we’ve been divorced for three years.” “You’re still his woman, regardless.” “Mike is it?” Mark asked looking at him. “Yeah and what’s your name?” “The name is Mark and unless you want to be eating that spaghetti through a straw, I suggest you mind your manners AND your own business.” “Oh yeah? And what are you going to do about it?” Mike asked standing up. “Michael don’t.” Samantha his wife said giving Shayna a sad look. Shayna couldn’t help but notice the bruise on Samantha’s cheek. She felt sorry for her. It used to be her in that position. Mark stood up when Michael took a step towards Shayna. “I wouldn’t if I were you.” “Mark please let’s just go. We were done anyway.” Shayna said putting her hand on his arm. “I know who you are…Wonder what your wife would think if she knew you were fucking that whore your with. What’s her name? Sara isn’t it.” Before Shayna knew what was happening Mark had the man by the throat it reminded her of the way he would do in the ring. “MARK!” She said loudly causing him to look at her. She could see the anger in his eyes and knew if she didn’t get him out of there Mike would be in serious trouble and Mark would end up going to jail. Mark released him and picked up his jacket. Throwing enough money down on the table to cover the bill he turned and walked out of the restaurant. “I should have let him beat the hell out of you.” Shayna said turning to Mike who was still gasping for air. Shayna took one last look at Samantha and mouthed for her to call her and followed the path Mark had taken. She found him leaning against his bike smoking a cigarette. “You know those things will kill you.” She said teasing him. “We all gotta die sometime.” Mark said looking at her with pain in his eyes. “Well if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em,” she said taking his cigarette and taking a drag before throwing it to the ground. “Shayna I’m sorry I over reacted and I ruined our evening.” “Mark, you didn’t ruin anything and you didn’t over react. He had no right to say to you what he did and I only stopped you because I wanted to spend the rest of the evening with you, not trying to bail you out of jail for killing him.” “I wouldn’t have killed him, just hurt him severely.” Mark said getting on the bike and starting it as Shayna climbed on the back. “Where too.” He asked. “I don’t care let’s just ride.” Shayna said resting her chin on his shoulder. “Good idea.” Mark said taking off. They had ridden for an hour when Shayna motioned for him to make a turn. The road was blocked off but there was enough room on the side for the bike to get through. Riding up the hill they came to an over look. Mark stopped the bike and shut off the engine and looked around. The scenery was beautiful you could see the lights of the town below and the Moon above the trees cast just enough light so they could see each other. “How did you ever find this place?” Mark asked. “I used to come up here after the divorce when I needed to think. Anna said it used to be a popular make out spot but in the early eighties a car went over the edge and they blocked it off so you couldn’t drive up here. I used to have to walk up here but I figured you could get through on the bike.” Shayna said getting off and walking to the edge and looked out over the town. “It is a great spot to think.” Mark said walking up behind her. It was getting cold out and knew she must be freezing. “You cold?” he asked slipping his arms around her. “Not anymore.” Shayna replied leaning back against him. “Shayna I have to ask this.” “What?” “What did Mike mean when he said that you were still his woman regardless?” Shayna sighed and wondered if she should tell him, if her uncle ever found out what had been going on over the last three years he’d be pissed. Deciding she could trust him she told him. “Andy has it in his mind that I belong to him, even though we are divorced, he still tries to run my life. One of the reason’s I haven’t dated anyone since the divorce is because Andy has a way of scaring people off.” Shayna whispered. “So what’s different about me?” “I don’t know. It’s strange; I haven’t been able to get you out of my head since I met you. I thought about it and if you were willing to ask me out then I was willing to go. I knew if I didn’t I would regret it. I don’t want to have any more regrets. And I don’t want Andy running my life anymore. If I want to go out with a friend I should be able to, If I want to start seeing someone I have the right too.” Mark gently turned her around to face him and tilted her chin up with his finger. Rubbing his thumb across her cheek he looked into her eyes and saw the fear and the pain she felt and wondered what the hell Andy Martin had done to her to put it there. Without thinking Mark lowered his head and captured her lips in a tender kiss. When Shayna didn’t pull away his tongue darted out and licked the seam of her lips requesting entrance. Shayna couldn’t believe what was happening, she had never made a habit of letting a man have more than a chaste goodnight kiss on the first date. But Mark wasn’t just any man. She had known the first time she had looked into his eyes that there was more to him then you could see. She slid her arms around his neck and found the rubber band that held the ponytail at the back of his neck secure and pulled it loose as she opened her mouth and allowed him entrance to the warm recesses of her mouth. Mark groaned when she ran her fingers into his hair. Running one of his hands down her throat and down her arm he finally slid it around her waist pulling her into him. Shayna could feel his errection against her and moaned as he held her to him deepening the kiss. Mark broke the kiss and nibbled his way down her throat to her ear. “God Shayna, what are we doing?” he whispered nibbling on her ear lobe. “I don’t know but it feel’s right.” She said pulling back to look at him. “Your right it does, but we need to slow this down or we might do something we’ll regret…I mean this is happening so fast. I don’t want to hurt you. My life is a mess right now, I don’t know whether I’m coming or going.” He whispered leaning his forehead against hers. Shayna reached up and gently touched his cheek. “Thank you.” She whispered kissing him gently. “For what?” he asked confused. “For thinking clearly. For some reason when I’m around you, every lucid thought in my head disappears. For not wanting to hurt me, any other man would have take advantage of the situation.” Shayna said looking up into his face. “Darlin…don’t get me wrong, I do want to make love to you I just want to make sure we both are ready. And somehow I don’t think three days is enough time to know each other well enough to make that decision.” Mark said framing her face with his hands. “You’re a good man Mark Calaway.” “Come on, I need to get you home before you freeze to death.” Mark whispered holding her close. Letting her go he opened up his saddlebag and pulled out a hooded sweatshirt.“Put this on, it’ll keep you a little warmer.” Shayna took off her jacket and handed it to him and slipped on the sweatshirt and read the logo DEAD MAN INC. You do realize you won’t be getting this back don’t you.” She said slipping it on with a smile. Mark helped her on with her jacket and pulled her close. “It’s yours.” He said dropping a kiss on her forehead then getting on the bike and revving the engine. The rode home Shayna holding on to Mark. When he pulled into her drive way he shut off the engine and sat there for a minute. “Do you want to come in for awhile? It’s still early.” Shayna asked quietly. “As much as I’d like to. I think we both know that might not be a good idea.” He said as she got off. “But my momma did teach me to always walk a lady to her door.” He added with a grin. “I’m glad you listened to her.” Shayna said taking his hand. Mark took her keys from her hand and went to unlock the door when he inserted the key the door pushed open. “Mark…I locked the door when we left.” Shayna whispered her eyes filling with panic. “Stay here while I check it out. Take my cell phone, if you hear anything strange dial 911.” Mark said quietly pushing the door open. “Be careful.” She said afraid for his safety, she had no idea what he’d find once he went inside. Mark walked inside quietly he looked around and didn’t find anything unusual in the hallway. Walking into the living room he cursed. Somebody had not only broken everything in site they had spray painted the walls. Calling her every filthy name in the English language. “Shayna.” He called out. Shayna walked into her living room and gasped. “Who would have done something like this?” She whispered tears springing to her eyes. “You know who did this as well as I do.” Mark said trying to control his anger. “But why would Mike do this, we were only having dinner.” “Honey I’m sorry, this is my fault. I embarrassed him and he retaliated on you.” Mark said taking his cell phone from her hands and dialing 911. He pulled Shayna into his arms when the floodgates opened and she started to cry. “911 What’s your emergency?” The dispatcher asked. “My name is Mark Calaway. I’d like to report a break in at 213 Silver Mountain Road.” ~Chapter 4~ After the police had come and gone, Shayna looked around the house. “I have to get this cleaned up.” She whispered having no idea where to begin. “Shayna, stop…It’s late we can take care of this tomorrow. Come up to the cabin with me. I don’t feel comfortable with you staying here by yourself.” Mark said when she began to pick up the mess. “I can’t let the girls see all this.” She whispered more tears starting to fall. “They won’t be home till Sunday, I can have the wall’s fixed by then and the place will be back together. I promise.” Shayna looked up at Mark with weary eyes and nodded. She knew it probably wasn’t the best idea in the world but she didn’t want to be alone tonight. Mark drove up to the cabin with a thousand reasons why he shouldn’t be doing this running through his head. It didn’t matter he wasn’t about to leave her unprotected. If it was Mike who broke into her house he might come back and he didn’t want her to get hurt. Mark shut off the bike and took Shayna’s hand as he unlocked the cabin door and walked inside. The look on Shayna’s face had him worried. Never had he seen anyone look so defeated. It made him wonder just what kind of hell her ex-husband and his friends put her through. “Shayna honey, I think we should call Vince and let him know what’s going on.” Mark said sitting down on the couch next to her. “No, Uncle Vince has enough to worry about without adding my problems to it.” Shayna said shaking her head. “Then let me call Shane.” Mark said gently brushing her hair out of her eyes. “No…the last time this happened Shane flew up here and all hell broke loose.” “This has happened before?” Mark said shocked. “It wasn’t as bad last time or the time before. It gets worse. I don’t know what I was thinking. I was afraid this would happen when I agreed to tonight.” “What are you talking about?” “Andy doesn’t want to be with me but he doesn’t want anyone else to be with me either.” “Shayna that’s ridiculous, you have a right to have a life. Why do you let him do this to you?” Mark said getting angry at the though of her being afraid to even have friends. “Mark do you think I like this, do you think I want to be alone for the rest of my life? You don’t know what kind of Man Andy is. He won’t stop, even if I moved he would continue to harass me.” Shayna whispered walking over to the fireplace and looking at the stones. “Shayna what the hell kind of marriage did you have?” Mark asked. “It sure as hell wasn’t a fairytale, and he was no prince charming I can tell you that. I mean it started out that way but soon afterwards it started.” Mark had a bad feeling he was going to find out more then he wanted to and he’d be forced to call Vince and tell him exactly what was going on. “What started?” “The fighting…it started out as verbal spats here and there, but then one day he just hauled of and back handed me for no reason, at least not that I could find. Ryan had a late afternoon doctors appointment, Andy got home before I did and he was angry that dinner wasn’t on the table when he walked through the door. I told him that the baby had a doctor’s appointment and dinner would be ready in an hour. He said that wasn’t good enough. I told him he could fix his own then and he hit me. After that any argument we got into turned physical.” Shayna whispered as a tear slid down her cheek. Mark could tell she was lost in the memories of the abuse she had suffered at the hands of her ex-husband. His blood was boiling he had never been one to raise his hand to a woman and Shayna of all people didn’t deserve to be treated in that way. Mark wanted to go to her and take her in his arms and tell her he’d never let anyone hurt her again. He knew he couldn’t make a promise he may not be able to keep. “Why did you stay with him as long as you did?” “Because I loved him…at least I thought I did. I guess I believed if I loved him enough he’d change. It wasn’t until I ended up in the hospital that with a three fractured ribs a broken nose and arm that I realized there was no changing him. I didn’t divorce him because he cheated on me. I divorced him because I was tired of my daughter seeing me battered and bruised. I didn’t want her to grow up thinking that was how someone treated you you loved. Telling Uncle Vince that Andy cheated on me was better then telling him I left because Andy was beating the hell out of me. Both Uncle Vince and Shane would have come up here and given him a taste of his own medicine. I couldn’t involve them.” Shayna whispered finally turning around and looking at him. Her tears were Marks undoing, he could see the pain in her eyes and wanted nothing more than to make it disappear. Getting up from where he sat he walked over to her and took her in his arms. Tilting her chin up so she was looking at him he looked into her eyes. Slowly dipping his head he took her mouth in a gentle kiss. Mark felt her relax as her arms slipped around his neck pulling him in closer. Mark ran his hands up and down her back. Cupping her butt with his hands he pulled her into him. She could feel his erection against her and moaned into his mouth. “Darlin’ I wish I could take all your pain away and make it disappear. You are one of the sweetest, loving women I’ve ever met. You shouldn’t have had to go through that.” Mark whispered moving to kiss each one of her eyelids. “Why couldn’t I have met you 7 or 8 years ago, maybe things would be different now. Maybe neither one of us would be hurting.” Shayna said reaching up and running her fingers through his hair. “I don’t know darlin’ maybe we were destined to meet now when we need each other most.” Mark said whispered as her fingers left his hair to trail over his chest. He could feel the heat from her hands through his shirt and wondered what those fingers would feel like against his bare skin. Mark felt her shiver and knew he was having the same affect on her that she was having on him. “Mark?” she whispered her palm cupping his cheek. “What is it darlin’? He asked his voice thick with emotion. “Make love to me.” She whispered running her thumb rubbing against his lips. “Shayna…I…” “It’s okay, I understand.” Shayna said stepping out of his arms feelings of rejection too much to bare. “Where are you going?” He asked as she grabbed her jacket and headed for the door. Shayna bit her lip trying to keep the tears at bay. “Home.” She said her eyes void of any emotion. “I don’t think you understand at all.” Mark said moving to block her path. “Yes Mark, I do. I asked your, and your not interested so if you’d just get out of my way I’ll go home before I embarrass myself further.” Shayna said quietly unable to look at him. “Arghh, you are so infuriating, I didn’t say a thing about not being interested. I’m trying to do the right thing and not take advantage of you. You just had a huge shock. If we made love right now could you honestly say it’s because you wanted to and not because you your emotional?” “Actually Mark I could, I’ve never been the type of woman who throws herself at a man because she’s vulnerable. I’ve had two lovers in my life one being my husband and the other being my high school boyfriend who I dated for four years.” Shayna said getting angry. “You know you’re even more beautiful when you’re angry.” Mark said reaching out and stroking her cheek with the back of his hand. “Stop saying that.” “Saying what? That you’re beautiful? Sorry but I don’t lie. You are beautiful.” Shayna looked down at the floor, years of criticism had given her a low self esteem making it hard for her to believe what Mark was saying was true. “You’re just saying that.” She whispered. “He did a real number on you sweetheart, I wish you could see what I see.” Mark said turning her around so she could see herself in the mirror. “Your lips were made for kissing, I’ve never seen eyes that shade of blue before when I look into them I feel like I’m drowning. There is something about you that won’t let me go. I do want to make love to you, I want to show you how it feels to be truly loved, I’m just afraid that in the end I’m going to end up hurting you. The last thing I want is to cause you an ounce of pain.” “I thought the American Bad Ass was a risk taker.” Shayna said looking at him in the mirror. “He is, but Mark Callaway isn’t at least not when it comes to a woman’s heart.” Mark said turning her around to face him. “Don’t you think that should be my choice?” “Shayna you don’t know what you’re asking for. I don’t know that I have anything to give you.” Mark whispered closing his eyes. “I’m not asking for anything from you, all I’m asking for is one night.” Shayna said gently reaching up and face. Mark didn’t know how to respond all he wanted was to make love to her all night long and at the same time he wanted to push her away so she wouldn’t get hurt. He was at war with himself and was loosing the battle. “Is that too much to ask? If it is, I’ll walk out of here right now and I won’t bother you again for the rest of your stay here.” Shayna whispered praying she wouldn’t have to do that. Mark had already gotten under her skin like a bad rash that wouldn’t go away she didn’t know if she could spend the next three months without seeing him. Mark looked down at Shayna and could read the wanton desire written all over her face. In her eyes he could read the need for him. “I hope you know what we are doing cause I sure as hell don’t know anything right now.” Mark whispered as his head descended taking her lips in a passionate kiss. Shayna breathed a sigh of relief when she felt Marks tongue probe her mouth seeking hers. Wrapping her arms around him she felt herself being lifted and carried through the cabin. Mark carried her in his arms into the bedroom his mouth never leaving hers his lungs were beginning to burn from lack of oxygen when he kicked the door shut with his foot. Breaking the kiss he looked down at her and grinned. “Your sure about this?” he asked running his hands down her arms. “Just shut up and make love to me.” Shayna said beginning to unbutton his shirt. As each button opened she placed a kiss on his chest. Mark groaned when her tongue lapped at his nipple. Once his shirt was completely undone he shrugged it off letting it fall to the floor. Using her tongue Shayna licked her way down his sculpted stomach and lazily traced circles around his navel eliciting another groan from him as he buried his hands in her hair. Shayna grinned up at him, unbuckling his belt she slowly undid the zipper her knuckles brushing against his erection causing him to jump in surprise. “Shayna…baby…your driving me wild.” He said pulling her to her feet and kissing her wildly. “That’s the whole point of this little exercise.” Shayna said pushing his pants over his hips and down his legs using her foot when her hands couldn’t reach them anymore. “One of us is overdressed and it sure as hell isn’t me.” Mark growled removing her shirt to find skimpy lace bra that barely covered her breasts. Palming one breast while his mouth feasted on the other one he felt Shayna tremble in his arms. “Oh God Mark…Please.” She begged running her hand through his hair. “Tell me what you want darlin?” he whispered removing her leather pants to find she was wearing a pair of the sexiest thong panties he’d ever seen. “I want you…inside me…NOW.” She groaned when he rubbed her clit. “All in good time babe, all in good time.” He said gently laying her back on the bed and kissing her gently while one finger dipped inside to find her already wet and ready. Mark kissed his way down her stomach; using his teeth he pulled her thong off. Shayna moaned as he placed a kiss on the inside of each thigh. He ached to be inside her but this was about her needs not his. Using his tongue Mark licked at her lips parting them. When his tongue touched her clit for the first time Shayna arched off the bed calling his name. Shayna could feel the fire burn out of control as he did something no other man had done to her before. She had heard her friends talk about men doing this but had never experienced it until that moment; it both excited her and frightened her to know that with such a simple act he could bring her such ecstasy. The room began to spin as Mark continued his assault on her clit. The moment he began to nibble on it gently with his teeth Shayna’s world exploded into a million colors. Mark felt her tighten around his fingers and drank greedily when her juices began to flow. It was like a damn had been opened. Hearing her cry out his name was the most beautiful thing he had heard in a long time. Making his way up her body he kissed her hungrily. Shayna could taste herself on him and moaned raking her nails down his back. “Please Mark, I need you.” She begged when he broke the kiss. Looking into her eyes he guided himself into her slowly. She was so tight he was afraid he was going to hurt her if he didn’t take it slowly. Shayna had other ideas in mind. Locking her legs around his waist she brought him fully inside her causing him to groan at the way her body fit with his perfectly. “God darlin’ you feel so good.” Mark moaned kissing her lips gently as he began to thrust slowly. Shayna watched him as he closed his eyes and began to pick up the pace. The raw emotion written on his face made her want to cry. She knew after tonight she’d never be the same. Shayna’s moans filled the room as Mark moved within her, sex had never felt this wonderful, Andy had always told her she was frigid in bed. “Mark…Pl…please.” Shayna cried out as the fire began to burn white hot again curling around in her stomach. “Tell me baby.” He groaned as her muscles began to contract around him. “Harder... Oh god…yes.” Shayna cried out as he slammed into her. Taking one of her nipples in his mouth he sucked on it biting gently. Shayna’s orgasm hit like a fierce storm exploding inside her taking Mark with her. Mark let out a loud feral growl as he spilled his seed deep inside her. All the pent up tension he’d felt over the last few months left his body leaving him exhausted as he collapsed on top of her. “Oh Mark…I’ve…never…felt…anything like that.” “That’s only the beginning darlin,” he whispered kissing her lightly as he rolled on to his back taking her with him. Shayna curled into him with her head pillowed on his chest. “I thought this was only going to be a one night thing.” Shayna teased. “Sweetheart I aint’ letting you get away that easily.” Mark said laughing as he wrapped his arms around her. “I hope not.” Shayna said smiling. She felt more relaxed then she had in years even though she had just done something she never pictured herself doing. Not only had she just slept with a man she barely knew he was a married man to top it off. “I love it when you smile, your whole face lights up.” Mark said stroking her cheek. “I think I’ve smiled more today then I have in a long time.” Shayna said drawing circles on his chest with one finger. “I wish I could make things better for you. I still think we should call Vince.” “Mark please don’t…I don’t want my family to know about what’s going on. Especially about the things I told you tonight. It won’t change it and all it will do is hurt Uncle Vince that I didn’t come to him.” Shayna whispered. “Shayna, I won’t say anything not unless anything else happens. I don’t like the idea of you here all by yourself once I leave.” Mark said gently. “I don’t want to even think about that yet.” “As much as I would like to I can’t stay here forever.” “I know you have your own life to get back to as well as a wife.” Shayna said without thinking. “I’m not talking about Sara, I have no idea what I’m going to about that whole situation and I’d rather not think about it. Right now I’m with you and that is all that matters.” “I’m sorry I should have brought that up. It’s just…” “Just what?” Mark asked when Shayna rolled onto her back. “I’ve never slept with a married man before, and it’s not something I’m proud of.” “Darlin’ Sara and I are separated, it’s not like I’m sleeping with you and then going home to her. The way things looked when I left we’ll be getting a divorce. So I don’t want you to feel like the proverbial “Other Woman” because as far as I’m concerned your not. I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that I love you, but I do care about you. I do think we should explore what ever it is between us and see where it could lead.” Mark said seriously. “What are you saying?” “I don’t know darlin’ we just have to see where this leads. It could turn into the best thing that ever happened to us.” “Or it could turn into the biggest heartache we’ve ever had.” Shayna thought to herself. “Are you willing to see what happens.” Shayna looked at him and knew she wouldn’t give up one single second of the time they had together not even if it would save her heartache in the end. “Yes Mark, I’m willing to see what happens.” Mark smiled at her as he kissed her gently. He knew she was taking a huge chance with her heart and swore he wouldn’t break it if he could help it. “Thank you.” He whispered against her lips. Shayna sighed as Mark ran his hand down the length of her body causing her to shiver. Feeling safe and secure Shayna fell asleep in his arms. Mark lay there watching her sleep till the morning light began to seep in the window. He didn’t know when it had happened but he knew sometime during the night all the resistance he had tried so hard to build up for fear of hurting her disappeared. Not only had she gotten under his skin but also into his heart. If he wasn’t careful he was going to end up falling deeply in love with her and that was something he wasn’t sure he could afford to do. Not with everything going on in his fucked up life. He also knew that whatever time they had together he’d cherish for the rest of his life. Pulling her closer to him he fell asleep. ~Chapter 5~ Shayna pulled into the driveway to find Mark sitting on her front porch. She could tell by the look on his face something was seriously wrong. The three months that he had been there they had spent nearly every waking moment together. Neither one of them had felt comfortable spending the night together when the girls were home so they suffered through the night without each other. Both Ryan and Samantha had grown very attached to Mark and were excited to see him waiting for him when Shayna had gotten them out of the car. “MARK Can I sit on your motorcycle?” Ryan asked running up to him and throwing herself into his arms. “In a little bit peanut. I need to talk to your mom.” Mark said giving each one of the girls a kiss on the cheek. “Ry, take Samantha in the house you can have two cookies each.” Shayna said walking up to the porch. “Come on SAM let’s go.” Ryan said grabbing her little sister’s hand. “Hey handsome.” Shayna said stepping into Marks arms. Mark held her close breathing in her sent without saying a word. “What is it? What’s wrong?” she asked pulling back to look into his face. “Sara had the baby, it’s a boy. I…I’ve got to go home so we can do the paternity test.” Mark whispered his voice thick with emotion. “When are you leaving?” Shayna asked unable to disguise the pain in her eyes as she looked at him. “I’m not leaving until tomorrow morning. I wanted to spend one last night with you.” Mark whispered reaching for her. “One last night? So that’s it? It’s over?” Shayna asked tears burning the back of her eyes. “No…I…I don’t want that to be it, Shayna honey don’t look at me like that. You knew I would have to go back when she had the baby.” Mark pleaded his heart breaking at the tears he saw shimmering in her eyes. “Look at you like what Mark? Like I’m hurt? Like I’m scared to death your going to go back there and forget you ever met me? Well I’m sorry that’s the way I feel and there is nothing I can do to change it. I told myself that I would be okay when the time came to say goodbye and eventually I will be but right now I feel like I’m loosing the best thing that ever happened to me and to what? Some whore who doesn’t know a good thing when she has it?” Shayna asked the tears falling. “Shayna…baby I couldn’t forget you even if I tried, you’ve wrapped your self around my heart it’s not even funny. Sometimes I can’t even breathe because I love you so much. I’m coming back, I just have to go home and take care of this once and for all.” “Don’t make promises you won’t keep Mark, go home to your wife and your child. The girls and I’ll be fine.” Shayna said her fear overriding any logical thinking she had and making the only decision she could. Let him go now and the heartache would be less then it would if she waited and he never came back. “Shayna what are you saying?” Mark asked confused as hell. He had just told her he loved her and was coming back and she was talking like he had just told her he was going back to Sara. “I know you Mark, once those test results come back that you ARE that babies father your going to feel obligated to stay. I can’t sit here and wait for that phone call or that letter telling me your not coming back.” Shayna whispered stepping back when he reached out to her. “Shayna don’t do this? If the baby is mine I can still be a father without being married to Sara.” He said grabbing her and pulling into his arms. “That’s just it Mark, you are married to Sara, do you really think she’s going to let go of you now that your cousin dropped her like hot potato. She’ll contest the divorce and you’ll be in an ugly court battle for who knows how long. Trust me I know. Just go home to Sara and forget about us.” Shayna whispered hating that she was doing this. It was better this way. He wouldn’t have to make that phone call telling her he wasn’t coming back and she wouldn’t be waiting for his return only to have her broke. “I’m not staying with Sara, but if this is what you want. I’ll go. Mark whispered leaning his forehead against hers. Shayna couldn’t utter a word, nodding she stepped back from him and wrapped arms around herself. “I love you, if you change your mind you know how to find me.” Mark whispered touching her face tenderly. “I have no regrets Mark, you taught me what it feels like to be truly loved. And for that I’m grateful.” Shayna said pressing her lips to his one last time. Mark kissed her back pouring all his feeling and love into one torturous kiss. “Tell the girls goodbye for me?” Mark requested his throat tight with emotion. It had been hard enough to say goodbye to their mother, he wasn’t sure he could get through telling them goodbye himself. Just like their mother they had wrapped themselves around his heart. Shayna nodded and watched as he got on his bike, started it and drove off. “Goodbye my love.” She whispered as he rode off. Once he was out of sight Shayna sank to the ground letting her tears fall. As Mark rode away from the woman he had fallen in love with he could feel the tears fall. He wasn’t the type of man who cried easily. Growing up he’d been taught real men don’t cry. His heart felt like it was breaking in a million pieces. She said she had no regrets, he only had one, and that was that it was over. Shayna somehow managed to pull herself together, holding her head high she walked into the house to find her daughters waiting in the living room. “Mama, where is Mark?” Ryan asked looking up from the television. “Come here girls.” Shayna whispered fighting back the tears. “Mommy is sad.” Samantha said informing her sister. “Mommy is alright, Mark had to go home.” Shayna said pulling the girls onto her lap. “Can we go to the cabin later and see him?” Ryan asked. “Not to the cabin honey, he had to go to his home in Texas.” “But Mark lives at the cabin.” Ryan said shaking her head. “Sweetie Mark was just visiting the cabin, he doesn’t live there.” “When is he going to come back?” “He’s not honey, we aren’t going to see Mark again.” “Why? Doesn’t he like us anymore?” Ryan asked starting to cry. “Yes honey he loves you both very much, he just has certain things he has to take care of. Things that have nothing to do with us.” Shayna whispered. “But…We like Mark, Mama why can’t he come back.” “Maybe one day he will come back for a visit.” Shayna said quietly. The look on her daughters face was killing her. Ryan didn’t except strangers easily, but Mark she had taken right to. Like she’d known him since birth. “Mama can I go to my room now.” Ryan asked sadly. “Sure honey, why don’t you take Samantha with you.” Shayna said as the two girls left the room hand in hand. Shayna got up and started cleaning the house. She knew if she didn’t do something she’d go crazy. Within two hours Shayna had the house spotless and was just about to make dinner when the phone rang. Praying it would be Mark she answered it on the first ring. “What are you doing sitting on the phone?” Vince teased. “No Uncle Vince I thought it might be…” “Might be who honey?” “I thought it might be Mark.” “Oh…that’s why I was calling, I tried to reach him on his cell phone and he’s not answering. I thought he might be with you.” “No…he’s not,” Shayna said trying to keep her emotions under control. “Sweetie what is it? What’s wrong?” Vince asked gently. He could hear the tension in her voice and knew something wasn’t right. “Mark probably isn’t answering his cell phone because he’s driving.” Driving? Where is he going? He has another two months leave. He was supposed to stay at the cabin the entire time. What happened?” “Sara had the baby. He had to go home.” Shayna whispered afraid if she said it any louder she’d burst into tears. “Shayna are you alright?” “I’m fine Uncle Vince, we’ll miss having him around but he has a family to get back too.” “Shayna Marie McMahon cut the crap, this is your Uncle you’re talking to. You maybe able to fool your Aunt Linda but not me.” “What?” “Don’t what me young lady, did something happen between you and Mark?” “Uncle Vince do you honestly think I would mess around with a married man?” Shayna asked praying lightening wouldn’t strike her for lying. “Shayna, it wouldn’t exactly be messing around with a married man. He is separated.” Vince said seriously. “That wouldn’t make it right…nothing is going on. Mark and I were just friends.” “Were? What your not even speaking any more.” Shayna loved her uncle to death but when it came to his children including her he could be the nosiest man on the face of the planet. “Yes Uncle Vince we are still talking. As a matter of fact he’s supposed to call me when he stops for the night. So I know he’s alright. When he does I’ll be sure to tell him to call you.” Shayna said lying through her teeth. “Alright honey, if you need anything or you need someone to talk to call me.” “Yes Uncle Vince.” Shayna said laughing. “I’m serious Shayna. Don’t think for a second that I’m buying anything you’ve told me.” “You’re going to think what you want anyway, so why fight it.” Shayna said rolling her eyes. “I have to go Uncle Vince, Ryan just set the house on fire and it’s burning to the ground…love you.” She said hanging up. Vince stared at the phone in amazement. He couldn’t believe she just hung up on him. “I’m going to kill her.” Vince growled as he sat the phone on the cradle. “Going to kill who?” Shane asked coming into his father’s office. “Your cousin.” Vince said sitting down. “Yeah right! Shayna could rob a bank, murder two guards and sell government secrets and you’d find someway to get her out of it. What did she do that is so horrible your thinking of killing her.” “She hung up on me.” Vince said laughing. “Oh my god, Death isn’t good enough. She hung up on you I know you can come up with something more horrific then death.” Shane said sarcastically. “I know torture her and then kill her.” Shane said jumping up. “Are you sure you’re my son?” Vince asked looking at him. “I don’t know dad…I always swore I looked more like the mailman.” “Get out of my office before I hurt you.” “Oh come on dad! It’s not the first time one of us has hung up on you. We do it all the time.” “Shane something is wrong with her and she’s not being honest about it.” “She’s not back with that jerk off she was married to is she.” Shane asked concern showing on his face. “Hell no…she’s not stupid.” “Then what?” “I think she was involved with Mark. I think something happened and they broke up.” “Mark who?” “Mark Callaway.” Vince said sitting back in his chair. “WHAT? IS SHE FUCKING CRAZY.” “Excuse me? Don’t talk to me like that. I’m still your father.” Vince said looking at his son. “Dad how could you let this happen. Taker is a married man. I’m going to kill him.” Shane said beginning to pace. “Shane would you calm down. Your cousin is a grown woman, she can see who she wants. She didn’t confirm it, I’m just guessing here. I won’t know anything until I talk to Mark.” “Dad so help me god if he has hurt her…” “You won’t do a single thing this is between them.” Vince said interrupting him. “But dad…” “Shane I mean it you are not to do or say anything do you understand me. I know your worried about Shayna but she’s strong, things will work out the way they are supposed to.” “Alright…I still don’t like the idea of her dating Mark.” “That is your opinion son, Mark is a good man and he’d take care of Shayna and the girls.” “Dad your talking like you know something more then your letting on.” Shane said getting up out of his chair. “I don’t know anything more then I told you. It’s just a feeling I have.” “Oh great…” Shane said rolling his eyes. “What is that supposed to mean.” “Dad every time you get “A feeling” somebody gets married.” Shane said. “Oh would you just go home to your wife.” Vince said grinning. “Exactly, you got that feeling about Marissa and I and we got married.” “Are you complaining?” Vince asked raising an eyebrow. “Hell NO! I’m proving my point.” “Go home Shane.” Vince said pointing to the door. Shane shook his head as he walked out of his fathers office closing the door behind him. He didn’t care what his father said he was going to find out what was going on, even if he had to fly to West Virginia and ask her himself. Hell he’d fly to Texas and confront Callaway if need be. Vince chuckled as Shane shut the door. His son was a piece of work, he had always been protective of both Stephanie and Shane but more so of Shayna because the two of them were so close. He knew that Shane would pose a problem if his suspicions were correct about his niece and Mark. “I’ll just have to make Shane see things my way.” ~Chapter 6~ Eight weeks later Mark sat in his lawyer’s office waiting to find out the results of Brandon’s paternity test. Sara had refused to come, she was still pissed at him for asking her for a divorce and for not believing Brandon was his son. He was glad she hadn’t come. He was sick and tired of fighting with her all the time. They weren’t even living together and she would call and start an argument about stupid shit. It drove him crazy. He had called Vince as soon as he got back to Texas and asked him if he could come back to work early. Vince had told him flat out no, not until the situation with Sara and Brandon was cleared up. He had been surprised Vince hadn’t asked what happened with Shayna. Half way home from West Virginia he had gotten two long messages from him asking what was going on and why his niece had sounded upset. He hadn’t been able to tell Vince the truth. He knew Vince was worried about Shayna hell he was worried about her. There was a second of the day that she didn’t cross his mind. It was worse at night when he laid in bed alone. He would close his eyes and see her smiling face. When he would finally fall asleep he’d dream about her. He had tried to call her a time or two but lost his nerve as soon as he heard her phone ring on the other end. He wouldn’t know what to say to her. She had made it painfully obvious she wanted it over. It felt like a knife was being thrust into his heart every time he thought about her alone and sad. He worried about her constantly. The sound of her voice as she told him to go home to his wife and child was burned into his memory like a brand. He loved her, it was like the old adage you don’t know what you got till it’s gone. It was true. He didn’t realize how deeply he loved her until he had lost her. “Sorry I took so long I was on the phone with Sara’s lawyer.” Tom Jenkins said coming in and closing the door to his office. “So is he mine or not?” Mark asked nervously. “Mark…I hate to be the one to tell you this, I’m sorry to have to tell you this but the results came back 99.9% that you are not Brandon’s father.” “I knew it would…I just had to be sure.” Mark said quietly. He had hoped he was Brandon’s father not that it would have changed anything between him and Sara but at least then the boy would have a father, as it was his cousin hadn’t even been by to see the baby or see if Sara needed anything. “Sara is demanding another Paternity test.” Tom said handing the test results to Mark. “What?” “Don’t worry, I told her lawyer to inform his client as far as you were concerned the matter was closed, and if she persisted to harass you any further we would see him in court. Now all we have to do is have you sign those divorce papers.” “I thought that we’d have to go to court.” Mark said confused. “No, in the according to your prenuptial agreement. Should Sara ever cheat on you and you should decide to divorce you. She gets nothing except what you are willing to give her, if you decide to give her anything at all. Those paternity papers are proof that she did indeed cheat on you. I believe that is why she’s trying to demand another paternity test.” “I have a question, If I was willing to give her something. Could it be given to Brandon instead of Sara?” Mark asked. “You could do that, it would have to be set up in a trust fund not available to him until what ever age you decided.” “Set it up.” Mark responded. “Mark are you sure?” Tom asked surprised. “I’m positive. His father is my cousin so he’s still a part of my family and John wants nothing to do with him. At least I’ll know when he gets older he’ll have something.” Mark said quietly. “No one can ever accuse you of being heartless” Mark smiled. “It’s the right thing to do, it’s not Brandon’s fault all this happened.” “I’ll get the papers drawn up, how do you want me to get them to you?” Tom asked as Mark stood up. “I’ll be going back to work soon, Could you send them to the corporate office? Vince will make sure his secretary gets them to me.” Mark said shaking his lawyers hand. “I’m sorry your going through all this, I never dreamed this would happen to you and Sara.” “Neither did I. Maybe it was for the best.” “I’ll talk to you soon. Like I said if she gives you any problems call me and I’ll take care of it.” Mark nodded and left his office, patting his coat to make sure he had the paternity test results. It was his ticket back to the ring. He needed to do something. With so much time on his hands all he could do was think about Shayna. Work would be a good diversion. Mark pulled out his cell phone as he walked out of the building and dialed Vince. Vince was talking to his secretary giving her a few last minute instructions before heading to Birmingham Alabama. “WWE Headquarters, Vince McMahon’s office how can I help you.” Maria Jensen said glancing at her boss. “Hi Maria it’s Mark Callaway is the boss in?” he asked getting into his truck. “Hi Mark, let me check for you. I think he was just getting ready to leave for the next show.” Vince nodded that he would take the call and walked into his office closing the door behind him. “Hey Mark, how are things?” “Things are good, I have the test results, Tom is drawing up the divorce papers now.” Mark said as he pulled out into traffic. “I take it the baby isn’t yours?” Vince asked quietly. “Nope, but then again I knew it wasn’t. It’s okay…Life goes on.” Mark said. “Mark?” “Yeah boss.” “What happened between you and Shayna? Shane just came back from seeing her and said she looks like shit. He’s pissed as hell at you, thinks you did something to his cousin.” “Vince…I’ll admit it Shayna and I were seeing each other, when I told her that Sara had the baby and I had to come back here so we could do the paternity test she got upset started crying and told me to go home to my wife and kid. I told her I was coming back and she told me not to make promises I might not be able to keep. I told her that I loved her and I was going to file for a divorce and she told me Sara would never let me go that easy. That I should just forget about her. That they would be fine without me.” Mark said sighing. “Damn, Mark did she tell you how her parents died?” Vince asked running his hand through his hair. “No, I know they died when she was sixteen.” “Mark they died on her 16th birthday, they had gone on a business trip over the weekend and promised they would be back on Monday in time for her birthday party. They never showed up. That is why Shayna said that. In case you hadn’t noticed Shayna has a very low self esteem. This is do mostly to her bastard of an ex husband.” “Vince what do I do? I can’t stop thinking about her. I’ve never felt this way about anyone in my life. I mean I close my eyes at night and I see her face.” “I don’t know Mark, but we’ll figure it out.” “Just so you know…I love her and I never wanted to cause her an ounce of pain.” “Mark I know that. If I thought you did I would kick your ass from here to kingdom come and then fire you for good measure.” Vince said seriously. “I know you didn’t want me to come back to work till this stuff was straightened out with Sara but I can’t stand not working. I need to do something before I go crazy.” “Alright Mark, how soon can you be in Birmingham?” “I can be there tonight.” Mark said breathing a sigh of relief. “I’ll see you at the arena then…And Mark stay clear of Shane for awhile.” “He’s that pissed then huhh.” “Yeah he is.” Vince said laughing. “I’ll see you tonight. Thanks boss I really appreciate this.” “Don’t mention it just do me a favor.” “What favor would that be?” Mark asked. “Call Shayna…It might do you both some good.” “I’ll think about it.” Mark said wishing it were that easy. “Goodbye Mark.” Vince said as he hung up the phone. Mark clicked off his cell phone and threw it on the seat next to him. Vince had said Shayna looked like shit. “It’s my own fault, if I would of listened to my instincts she wouldn’t be hurting right now.” Mark said hitting his palm on the steering wheel. Mark glanced at the phone that was beckoning for him to make the call, maybe if he heard her voice he’d be able to get her off his mind. “What the hell is there to loose.” Mark said to him self as he dialed her number and listened to it to ring. Shayna had finally gotten Samantha to sleep, she’d had an ear infection and had been up all night crying the night before. She was walking into the bedroom when she heard the phone ring. Grabbing it before it could wake the kids up she answered it. “Hello” Shayna heard nothing on the other end. “Hello” she said again getting irritated. “Shayna…it’s Mark don’t hang up.” He said quietly. “Mark? What are you doing?” She whispered her heart pounding wildly at the sound of his voice. “I…Hell Shayna I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, all I know is that I miss you…It’s been hell without you.” “Mark we discussed this, I thought we agreed it was better this way.” Shayna said fighting back tears. “No Shayna, you discussed it and YOU decided it was best. You didn’t give me much room to agree or disagree.” Mark said his voice taught with the strain he’d been feeling. “Mark you need to work things out with Sara.” Shayna sighed tiredly. “Damn it Shayna, there is nothing to work out with Sara. Brandon isn’t mine. And even if he was I still wouldn’t stay with her, I’d be living a lie. I don’t love her, I love you. Your just to damn stubborn to see that.” Mark said getting frustrated. “Mark, if you called to yell at me I’m going to hang up. I haven’t had any sleep in the last twenty four hours and I don’t need this right now.” “Why haven’t you had any sleep? Are you alright?” Mark asked his concern growing suddenly remembering Vince said she had looked like hell when Shane was there to visit. “I’m fine it’s Samantha, she’s sick and was up all night.” “Did you take her to the doctor? What did he say?” “She has an ear infection he gave me some antiobiotics and some ear drops to kill the pain. I just got her to sleep when you called. She’ll be alright.” Shayna said laying back on her bed. “Damn it Shayna, I should be there.” “Mark…please don’t start this again.” Shayna whispered. “I’m sorry honey, it’s just that I miss you so damn much I can’t think straight.” “Mark, its not that I don’t love you because I do…I just don’t think the timing is right. We met under strange circumstances. What if this is all about you hurting over Sara. I don’t know that I could handle finding out I was your rebound.” “My rebound? Shayna that’s not the case.” “Maybe in a perfect world we could be together but the world isn’t perfect.” “Shayna…” “I have to go Mark, take care of yourself.” Shayna whispered hanging up the phone. Mark stared at the phone in disbelief, she had just hung up on him. Something was wrong, the Shayna he knew would never hang up on anyone, except for that idiot ex of hers. He had to find out what was going on. Mark picked up his phone and dialed Vince’s office again hoping he’d catch him before he left. When Maria answered and told him that Vince had already left Mark told her to tell Vince he’d meet him next week in Detroit and that he was heading to West Virginia to see Shayna. Stopping by the house he now lived in Mark grabbed his gear and some clothes and headed out to the airport. He’d thought about calling his sister and asking her for a ride but knew it was too late. He’d call her tomorrow and tell her what was going back to work. None of his family knew about Shayna and didn’t need to know until he was ready. By the time Mark got to the airport and had a ticket in his hand he barely had enough time to make it to the terminal. Once on the plane he sat down in his seat breathing a little easier. ~Chapter 7~ Shayna hung up the phone and looked down at the floor. “Damn him.” She whispered as the tears she had fought so hard to hold back fell. The last couple of day’s she’d been doing really good on not thinking about him. Wondering if he was all right. Then with one phone call all the doubts she’d been having came back. She’d almost been able to convince herself they were better off apart. The sound of loneliness in his voice had tore at her heart, making her wish she could hold him in her arms. She loved him but love sometimes faded and she couldn’t go through another heartache. Not now when she was just getting things back on track after the divorce. Shayna got up from the bed and opened her dresser to find a night gown sitting instead what she found was Mark’s Deadman Inc. sweatshirt. She’d forgotten she’d shoved it in her drawer. She’d planned on sending it to him at headquarters. She lifted it to her face and smiled. She could smell his cologne on it still. Feeling the urge to feel close to him she got undressed and slipped it over her head. Wrapping her arms around herself she got into bed and fell into a peaceful slumber for the first time in weeks. When Mark’s plane landed he didn’t hesitate he rented a car and drove the two hour trip to Shayna’s. When he pulled into the driveway he glanced at the clock and knew she’d still be asleep. He didn’t know if he should use the spare key he’d forgotten to give back to her when he left or not. Deciding to use it he quietly unlocked the front door and made his way through the house to Shayna’s room. The night light in the bathroom lit a path to her bed and he could see her sleeping soundly. Mark watched as she rolled over in her sleep and hugged a pillow to her. He wished it was him she was holding. Taking a deep breath he made his way to the bed and gently sat down next to her. “Shayna...darlin’ wake up.” He whispered brushing her hair away from her face. Shayna moaned in her sleep calling Marks name. Shayna was dreaming he was there with her, making love to her. She could feel him run his fingers through her hair and him gently kiss her cheek. It was when he whispered he loved her in her ear that she realized she wasn’t dreaming and sat straight up in bed staring into Marks face. “WHAT IN THE HELL?” she said jumping out of the bed. “Darlin don’t get mad, I was worried…you didn’t sound good on the phone and when you hung up on me I guess I went a little overboard.” “A little overboard?” Shayna said staring at him in shock. “How did you get here so fast?” Shayna asked still half asleep. “I took a plane. I’m supposed to be in Birmingham, I’m going back to work.” “Then why aren’t you there? I can’t believe this. Mark Uncle Vince is going to kill you.” “No he’s not…he knows where I am and why.” “Oh my god, is that why Shane came here, digging for information?” “No, Vince didn’t know until yesterday anything about us. Shayna come sit down and talk to me…please.” “Mark how did you get in here. I locked the door when I went to bed.” “I used the key you gave me before. I forgot to give it back to you. Now would you come over here? So we can talk.” “Mark this is ridiculous. It’s 4:30 in the morning. You flew halfway across the country and drove two hours to make sure I was alright.” “I love you what can I say.” Mark whispered as she sat down leaving enough space between them. “Mark doesn’t say that.” Shayna said closing her eyes. “Why not?" It’s the truth. I’ve never lied to you before and I’m not going to start now.” “Because…We can’t do this.” Shayna whispered her heart breaking when she saw the emotion in his eyes. “Shayna, what is so wrong with us loving each other. We are two grown adults. We don’t need anyone’s permission.” “Mark you don’t understand.” Shayna said getting up and walking to the window. “Then make me understand, tell me what is going on? Explain to me why we can’t be together when it’s obviously killing us both being apart.” Mark said walking to her and turning her to face him. “Because…everyone I’ve ever loved has either left me or died…I can’t loose you too. It would kill me.” Shayna whispered tears streaming down her face. “Baby…I’m not going to leave you and I don’t plan on dieing till I’m old and decrepit. I love you and I don’t care who knows it.” “Things happen that are beyond your control.” Shayna said quietly. “That’s right Shayna shit happens. It doesn’t mean you give up. You carry on and you live through it. I’m not the easiest person to live with, but I need you in my life. I try and picture the rest of my life and I can’t see it without you and the girls in it.” Mark said stroking her cheek. “Oh Mark…I...” “All I’m asking is for you to let me love you, I want to be the one you turn to when your sad, the one you laugh with, the one you go to sleep dreaming about at night. Don’t walk away from us. Not when we could be so good together.” Shayna looked up at him and could feel herself starting to believe him. It scared her. She didn’t want to loose another person she loved, but Mark was right about one thing. She couldn’t give up on the best thing besides her kids that had ever happened to her. She didn’t know what to say, she’d been hurt so many times that she was afraid. She didn’t dare risk it, if it was just her at risk she might risk it all, but it wasn’t she had to think about the girls’ hearts as well. “I love you Mark, but I can’t chance it. I have the girls to think about. Ryan was upset for days when you left. Andy hasn’t seen them since the last time. I can’t have them become attached to you and then you disappear from their lives.” Shayna whispered stepping back from him. Mark ran his fingers through his hair, he was hurt and angry that she thought so little of him. He thought she knew him better than that. “Shayna, what makes you so sure I’m ever gonna leave. Why would I. Not when I know how damn much it hurts living without you.” Mark said trying to remain calm he didn’t want to scare her but he felt like punching a wall anything to make the pain in his heart go away. “Mark…please…just go.” Shayna whispered fighting back tears. “I’ll go but I’m not giving up on us.” Mark said grabbing her and pulling her into his arms. Mark captured her lips in a bruising kiss. Shayna tried to push against his chest but ended up sliding her arms around his neck and kissing him back. Mark let out a moan from deep in his throat. Shayna had a way of touching his soul. In a way no other woman had been able to. He couldn’t give up on her. It was like she was the air he breathed and without her he would be lost. Shayna knew she shouldn’t be kissing him back, it would only make matters worse but once she felt his lips on hers all logical thinking was lost. She needed him, needed to be in his arms even for a little bit.” “Mark pulled back from her and looked into her eyes. Seeing the desire there he picked her up and laid her on the bed. Kissing her forehead he ran his hand up her bare leg. “I want to make love with you one last time.” Mark whispered. “This isn’t a good idea.” Shayna said. “Maybe not, but I from the look on your face you want me as much as I do you.” Shayna reached up and brushed the hair out of his eyes, She knew after tonight she would have to stay as far away from Mark as possible or risk everything. Mark stared down at Shayna silently asking for permission to continue. Without saying a word Shayna pulled his mouth to hers and ran her tongue along the seam of his lips. Mark kissed her hungrily slipping his hand up under her sweat shirt he grinned. “Don’t you see darlin’ we’ll never be able to stop wanting each other.” Mark whispered tenderly. “Wanting each other sexually doesn’t guarantee a long life together.” Shayna said seriously. “There is no guarantee’s in life Shayna.” Mark said getting off her and straightening his clothes. “Where are you going?” Shayna asked dumbfounded as he walked to the chair where he had thrown his leather coat. “I’m going to Birmingham to meet Vince. When you realize you love me enough to take a chance let me know.” Mark said walking out the door and closing it behind him. Mark walked into the living room and glanced towards the stairs that led to the girls bedrooms. He didn’t want to leave without seeing them. Mark walked up the stairs quietly and into Samantha’s room to see her curled up in a ball with her arms wrapped around the small bear he had won for her out of the crane machine one day when he took the girls to lunch at Anderson family Diner while Shayna was at work. Mark sat down on the edge of her bed and smoothed back her curls. It killed him to know that he couldn’t be apart of their lives. Ryan and Samantha may not be his, but it didn’t matter, he loved them as if they were. “I’m sorry baby girl. I’m trying, I really am.” He whispered brushing a kiss against her cheek. She felt warm to the touch and knew he better tell Shayna. Sighing he got up and walked into Ryan’s room. He was surprised to a poster of him on each one of her walls, one of them was of him in the old day’s as the deadman. It almost made him laugh, most of the kid’s were afraid of him back then. He walked to the bed and sat down. Ryan rolled over and looked up at him sleepily. “Marky?” she whispered groggily. “Yeah peanut, it’s me.” Mark said pulling her onto his lap when she sat up and held her arms out to him. “How come you lefted us?” She asked laying her head against his chest. “Don’t you like us anymore.” “Of course I do, I love you. I just had some grown up stuff to take care of.” Mark whispered his throat tightening as he spoke. “Are you gonna stay?” “I can’t baby.” “But you said you love us, if you love us then you can stay.” “Well your mommy and I talked about it and it’s not a good idea right now.” Mark explained. “I think it’s a great idea. I want you to stay,Pleaaaase Marky.” “I wish I could honey, but I have to go back to work or your Uncle Vince might fire me.” “Uncle Vince won’t fire you, mama says he’s full of hot air and that his bark is scarier then his bite what ever that means.” “Your right sweet heart it is. But I still have to go back. I’m working on getting your mama to let me be with you guys.” “Mama’s been sad since you left. I bet if you came back she’d be happy again.” Ry said looking up at him with big blue eyes. “She’s been sad huhh?” Mark asked gently. “Yeah, she cries at night. She don’t think I hear her but she does. And I heard her arguing with Uncle Shane. She told him to mind his own damn business. That you were a good guy.” Ryan said. Mark looked at her and grinned. “You shouldn’t say damn, it’s a bad word.” Mark told her gently. “Well mama said it and you just said it, how come I can’t say it?” she asked innocently. “Because Princess’s don’t swear. I don’t think your mama would like you telling me her secrets.” Mark said laying her back down on her bed and tucking her under the covers. “Somebody’s gotta. Did you see my new posters?” Ry asked pointing to the deadman poster. “Yes I did, doesn’t he scare you?” “He’s not scary…That’s YOU with make up on and a costume. I may be six but I’m not dumb.” Ryan said rolling her eyes. “Your very smart for six years old and I love you.” Mark said leaning down to kiss her forehead. “Marky? Will I see you again…I mean besides on TV?” “I hope so honey, like I said I’m working on that.” “Well I’m gonna work on that too, if I throw enough fits she might let you.” Ryan said coming up with a brilliant plan of action. “You let me handle it, don’t go given your mama a hard time.” Mark said laughing. “Yes sir, I love you Marky.” Ryan said wrapping her arms around his neck and hugging him tight. “I love you too darlin’ now you get some sleep.” Mark got up and went to the door as Ryan rolled over to the wall and closed her eyes. Mark looked at her for a long minute then walked out closing it softly behind him. He wasn’t looking where he was going and bumped into Shayna. “Uhh…Sorry…I just wanted to see them before I left.” Mark stammered wondering how much of his conversation with her daughter she had heard. “It’s okay, I was just coming to check on SAM.” Shayna said looking at her feet. “I better go.” Mark said stepping around her before he dared to take her in his arms. Mark walked to the stairs and hesitated. “Shayna, like I said before if you change your mind you know how to find me.” Shayna nodded and watched him start to head down. “Mark…” “Yes?” he said not turning around. “Be Careful…please don’t get yourself hurt.” “I’m always careful “ He said turning and walking downstairs and out the door. The closing of the door echoed in Shayna’s ears and she prayed god would help her get through this. She needed all the help she could get be cause she sure as hell didn’t know if she was strong enough. ~Chapter 8~ Vince sat in his make shift office in the Palace of Auburn Hill arena, in Detroit. Mark had been back a week and was in worse shape then when he had left. He had called him to the carpet several times for his attitude and was contemplating suspending him. Linda however had disagreed telling him it would only make matters worse. They both knew what ever was bothering him had to do with Shayna but didn’t know how to fix it until Shane had come to him and asked him to take a leave of absence for the last three months of Marissa’s pregnancy and the first three after the baby was born. Remembering how much he had missed that part of his kids lives he readily agreed to think about it, which had surprised both Shane and Marissa. All he had to do was figure out who to put in Shane’s place while he was gone. He looked up from the employee files Maria had faxed to him when a knock sounded at the door. “Enter.” “Hey daddy, Paul said you wanted to see me.” Stephanie said coming into his office. “Yeah princess come on in and close the door.” Vince said sitting down the files. “What’s going on? Shane just told me you were thinking about letting him have a six month leave of absence.” “He was correct, I am, It’s important for him to be with his wife during the last months of her pregnancy.” “Well I won’t argue with you on that one, but who’s going to help me run the things here while he’s out. Now that we’ve put RAW and Smackdown together it’s a big job for one person, not that I can’t handle it…I’m just saying.” “I know what your saying sweetie that is why I wanted to talk to you. Who would you recommend?” “I don’t know daddy, it seems like anytime someone outside the family steps in all hell breaks loose. I mean look at what happened when Eric was running RAW things were going down the tubes.” “So your saying you would only trust a family member?” Vince said giving her a devilish grin. “Yeah but you and mama are to busy at headquarters. That only leaves Shayna and I don’t know if she’d agree.” “She would if Shane asked her to and told her it was so he could be with Marissa.” Vince said slyly. “Daddy…Are you sticking your nose in again where it doesn’t belong?” Stephanie asked laughing. “Who ME? I would never do a thing like that.” Vince said acting as if he was hurt. “Yeah right not unless one of your children were hurting and you thought you could fix it. I know you look at Shayna as another daughter. I also know Shayna was seeing Mark and by the way he’s been acting lately I know something isn’t right in paradise.” “Steph, Shayna is afraid to let Mark in because of that fear she has of everyone leaving her. I think if she’s around him and has no choice but to see him on a daily basis, he’ll be able to get it through her thick skull that he loves her.” “Alright daddy, have Shane call Shayna. Shayna will do it, she’d do anything for Shane.” “Thanks sweetie I knew I could count on you. You just need to make sure anything to do with Mark is put in Shayna’s lap. Maybe we could split the wrestlers in half give half to you half to Shayna.” Vince suggested. “Hey that might work, it would take a big load off of both of us.” “I’ll get to work on it, hopefully Shayna will be here within a week. Go find Shane for me, so I can get the ball rolling. This stays between the family until she gets here, if she agrees.” Vince said kissing his daughters cheek. An hour later Shane walked out of his fathers office none to happy. He knew his dad and Steph were up to no good. If Shayna came here she’d be right in Takers face day in and day out. The two of them would be back together in no time. He didn’t like the idea, he had no choice his father told him. “No Shayna, No Leave of Absence”. He had to talk her into coming and there was no ifs ands or buts about it. Shayna was sitting at her desk at work the next day when the phone rang. “Davis Reality, Shayna McMahon how can I help you.” She said answering it. “Hey Cuz” Shane said cheerfully. “Hi Shane what’s going on.” Shayna asked glancing at the boss’s door. He didn’t like personal calls and she was skating on thin ice as it was. She was tempted to quit. She only worked there for something to do. Her trust fund was more than enough to support her and the girls for the rest of her life. “I have a huge favor to ask.” Shane said seriously. “Uhh Ohh, what’s up? Is everything alright with Marissa and the baby?” “Yeah, actually it has to do with Marissa and the baby though.” “I’ll help out if I can.” “I asked dad if I could take a leave of absence for the next six months. Dad said yes on one condition.” “Why do I get the feeling I’m not going to like this condition?” Shayna asked sighing. “You might not, but I really need you to do this for me.” “What is it?” “Dad said I can only take a leave of absence if you come take my spot till I come back. You’d be working with Stephanie. Who is very excited about the prospect of having you around.” “Shane…I don’t know…I mean…” “Shayna if your hesitating because of Taker…I promise you there won’t be a problem.” “Shane it has nothing to do with Mark. What about my job, and the girls. Ryan starts school in September.” “Shayna come off of it, you don’t even need to work. As for Ry, dad said he’d hire somebody to home school her.” Shane said sounding like he was ready to beg. “Shane hold on a second…” Shayna said turning to see her boss glaring at her as he came out of his office. Shayna put Shane on hold and looked up at Mr. Davis. “Shayna is that a client?” he asked. “No sir, it’s my cousin. Family emergency.” “Seems like you’ve had a lot of “family emergencies” lately.” He said crossing his arms over his chest. “I’m sorry but I’m going to have to let you go. I need someone whose head is on the job not out in la la land.” “EXCUSE ME?” Shayna said taking his remark as an insult. “You heard me. You haven’t been on the ball.” “I’m sorry you feel that way. I’ll have my desk cleared out by 5:00.” Mr. Davis stared at her in shock. He’d expected her to fight him on it. Instead she didn’t even bat an eye at it. “Very well then. You’ll have a check for severance pay with your pay check.” “Don’t bother, I don’t need your money or your charity.” Said with a bitter laugh. Mr. Davis stormed back into his office and slammed the door as Shayna picked up the phone. “Sorry Shane, It seems the job isn’t a problem anymore.” She said starting to grab her personal effects. “What happened?” “I just got fired.” “WHAT?” “You heard me…When do you need me to start?” “Friday if at all possible.” “Where will you all be.” “Oklahoma City. I’ll have the travel department overnight your tickets.” Shane said shocked she agreed so quickly. “Alright why don’t we fly out Wednesday, that way you can show me the ropes. I mean I’ve been around the business as long as you have but I’m sure things have changed to a certain extent.” “Shayna it’s Tuesday.” Shane gasped. “You want me there right?” “Well yeah.” “Then stop arguing and just do it.” “Yes Ma’am.” Shane said laughing as he hung up the phone. Shayna hung up the phone and sighed, she was afraid she was making a huge mistake. She’d told Shane her hesitation had nothing to do with Mark, but in reality it had everything to do with him. ~Chapter 9~ When Shayna had broke the news to the girls they had responded with enthusiasm, Ryan had jumped around screaming she’d get to see “Marky”. Samantha was happy to see Aunt Linda who she knew would spoil her rotten. Since it was only Wednesday they flew to Minneapolis first where the WWE was putting on a show, at the airport they were met by the entire family including Marissa. “I don’t know how to thank you.” Marissa said giving her a hug. “Just take care of yourself.” Shayna said smiling. Shayna looked over at Linda who was listening with interest to what ever Samantha was telling her. “Aunt Linda, you do know she’s not going to let her out of your site don’t you.” “That’s fine sweetie, it’ll give me practice for when the little one is born.” Linda said smiling. “Sweetie, Linda is going to take the girls shopping, while we have a meeting with all the talent. We haven’t announced that Shane is going on a leave of absence. We figured it would be easier if we did it when we introduce you as his replacement.” “Mommy? When can I see Marky?” Ryan asked quietly. “I don’t even know if he’s here, honey.” Shayna said picking up her daughter. “Please Mommy I really, really want to see him. ”Ryan said giving her the same puppy dog eyes she’d been giving her since she’d seen Mark last. “You’ll see him tonight at the dinner party we are throwing welcoming your mom to the WWE Staff.” Stephanie said. “Yeah!” “Marky?” Vince asked chuckling. “I don’t know where she came up with that from. She hasn’t stopped calling him that since she met him.” Shayna said laughing. “Come on we are going to be late. I’ve got a staff member getting your bags.” As they rode to the hotel, Vince explained that they were meeting in one of the convention rooms and she would wait in the hall until it was announced that Shane would be taking a leave. “Why do I have to wait in the hall.” Shayna asked. “Oh you know your uncle he loves dramatic entrances.” Linda said rolling her eyes. Vince’s cell phone rang and he answered it as they pulled up to the hotel. While he was on the phone Stephanie explained to her the plan to split up the wrestlers between the two of them so it would lighten the load. “Isn’t that kind of splitting the roster again? I mean you just put RAW and Smackdown back on the same billing.” Shayna said getting out of the car. “They are still on the same bill it’s just that when or if they have a problem yours come to you and mine come to me. No big deal.” Stephanie said shrugging as Vince hung up from his call. “Everyone is waiting lets go.” Vince said winking at Shayna. “Come on girls, how would you like to go to the toy store?” Linda asked keeping them in the limo. “Cool can we get a present?” Ryan asked. “Ryan Malissa…” Shayna said. “Oh you hush, It’s my prerogative if I want to buy them something” Linda said laughing. “Alright but don’t go over board Aunt Linda, I mean it.” “Shayna come on, the girls will be fine with Mom. “Stephanie said dragging Shayna into the hotel. They rode the elevator up to the fifth floor and were greeted by JR. “Welcome back Shayna, it’s been a long time.” He said giving her a hug. “Thank you Jim, it’s good to see you.” “You ready for all this.” “Do I have any other choice?” “I don’t think so darlin.” Jim said laughing as he followed Stephanie, Vince and Shane through the doors leaving Shayna in the hallway to wait nervously. Vince walked to the front of the room and sat on the edge of the table that had been set up. “I’m sure you’re all wondering why we’ve called this impromptu meeting.” He said looking at them seriously. “It would be nice.” Shane Helms said getting elbowed by Lita. “Well as you know my daughter in law has three months left until she gives birth to the first McMahon grandchild. Shane has asked to take a leave of absence until the baby turns three months old. Which I’ve granted him.” “Who’s going to be taking over for him.” Glenn Jacobs asked sitting up straighter in his chair. Worried they were going to get some power hungry idiot. “I’m getting to that. Shane, Stephanie, Linda and I sat down and talked about it. We decided that with the problems we’ve had in the past of people who were in charge we wouldn’t want to hire somebody from the outside or who hadn’t been around this business most of their lives and who didn’t have the company’s interest as well as yours at heart.” Vince looked around and noticed everyone shifting uneasily in his or her seats. “Before I introduce Stephanie’s new partner in crime I believe both Shane and Steph have something they want to say. Shane you want to go first?” Vince asked looking at his son. “Well guy’s I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t know you were in good hands. Marissa knows and understands how much this company means to me, and how much your friendships mean to me. I trust my replacement explicitly. And I want you all to know that should any problems arise that you don’t think is being handled fairly or correctly your more then welcome to call me or go to Stephanie, but in all fairness just let my replacement know that you are doing so. I just need this time with my wife before the baby comes and don’t feel I can do that and work as much as I do now.” Shane said turning to Stephanie. Stephanie looked around the room at Paul, she knew everyone including him was wondering who the mysterious new boss was. Her father had sworn her to secrecy, telling her she couldn’t even tell Paul what was going on or that Shane was leaving for a while. “As Shane said I myself trust this person with everything in me. I would trust them with my child’s life.” Steph said. “Something you want to tell me honey?” Paul asked causing everyone to laugh. “That is IF I had one.” Steph said sticking her tongue out at him. “Anyway, I’ve known this person for as long as I can remember and I’m very excited they’ve decided to join us. I know you’ll all show them the same respect you show Shane and I.” “We show you respect?” Shawn Michaels asked giving her a dimpled grin. “Alright everyone that’s enough. Without further ado I’d like to introduce you to the newest member of the WWE Family and the new Co-General Manger of RAW/Smackdown…My niece Shayna McMahon.” Vince said grining as JR opened the door and Shayna walked into the room. At the mention of Shayna’s name Mark’s head snapped up, he’d just taken and drink of water from a water bottle and spewed it across the room. Gasping for air Glen pounded him on the back. “Dude what the hell is wrong with you?” Glen asked laughing. “Nothing.” Mark said not taking his eyes off Shayna. “Thank you Uncle Vince, I’d just like to say how great it is to be back amongst all of you. Most of the veterans here I know but there are some of you, actually a lot of you I don’t know. So I’d like to tell you a little about myself, As you know my name is Shayna, I’m 33 yrs old. I attended Brown University with Shane where I obtained my degree in business management and hospitality. I have two children, Ryan who is 6 and Samantha is 3, they are currently being spoiled by their Aunt Linda and I’d like to apologize in advance if they should bother any of you. They are both very excited to be here.” “Is your husband with you?” Matt Hardy asked eyeing Shayna up and down causing Mark to glare at him. “I’m not married. Anyway I don’t want any of you to think I’m coming in here to try and take Shane’s place. I’m doing this as a favor to him. Upon Shane’s return I will gladly hand things back over to him. Any of you have anything you’d like to know please feel free to ask.” Shayna said smiling. She didn’t dare look at Mark because she could feel the tension radiating from him. “When you leave JR and Jerry will be giving you all a sheet, to make things easier on Shayna until she gets a handle on things we’ve come up with a split load, Some of you will be under Steph and some of you will be under Shayna. This is not up for discussion. It’s mixed with RAW/Smackdown personnel.” Vince said dismissing the group. Several of the wrestlers came up to Shayna welcoming her to the company. Most of them being the Veterans she’d known most of her life. “It’s about time you joined us.” She heard from behind her. Shayna turned around to find Terry standing there with his arms open wide for a hug. “Hey Hogan, it’s good to see you.” Shayna said warmly. “I can’t wait to meet those girls of yours.” Terry said smiling down at her. He’d always liked Shayna she was a nice girl, it would be good to have her around. “Thanks Terry” Shayna said stepping out of his arms when she noticed Mark watching her. Shayna finished talking to the group surrounding her and told Steph she was going to go unpack before the girls got back. She was walking down the hall to her room when a door opened and she was pulled into a room and pushed up against the door. “What the hell are you doing? Do you enjoy torturing me.?” Mark growled his face mere inches from hers. “Mark let me go.” Shayna whispered tears stinging her eyes. The grip he had on her arms was painful. “Answer me and I will.” He said staring into her eyes. “I don’t know what your talking about.” “I’m talking about this. You can’t tell me you haven’t fucking seen this list.” Mark said shoving the paper he was holding into her face. “What is it?” She asked quickly scanning the paper. “Your group! I’M FUCKING ON IT.” He said letting her go and walking away from her. Mark stood with his back to her, hands on his hips trying to calm down. He had nearly had a heart attack when she had walked into the room. “Mark I didn’t come here to torture you, Shane asked me for a favor and I couldn’t tell him no…not when it’s something as important as being with his wife when she was giving birth.” “Why not? I wasn’t with mine now was I, I was with you.” Mark retorted angrily. “FUCK YOU, I didn’t ask you to come and stay in my cabin, I didn’t force you to ask me out and I sure as hell didn’t ask to fall in love with you.” Shayna said wrenching open the door and slamming it on her way out. “FUCK.” Mark said hearing the door slam. “Me and my fucking mouth.” He said sitting down on the bed. Holding his head in his hands he wished for the first time in months he’d never gone to West Virginia. Shayna stormed down to her room and opened the door. As soon as she was inside the phone began to ring, “Hello” She said answering it fighting back tears. “Shayna I’m sorry.” She heard on the other end. “Mark, look I know your not happy I’m here but I couldn’t let Shane down. If you want I’ll talk to Steph and Uncle Vince and see if we can switch lists.” Shayna said sitting down on the bed. “That’s not what I’m talking about, I’m sorry for what I said. I said it out of anger and you know I didn’t mean it. You don’t understand how it felt to see you walk into that room knowing I’m going to have to see you day in and day out, then to find out I have to come to you for everything. I love you and I can’t just forget that even if you don’t love me back.” “Mark…Please…I don’t want to have this conversation again, just give me a little time. I want us to be friends if not for our sakes then for the girls. They are already asking when they can see you. Ry hasn’t stopped talking about you since I told her that we were going to be coming here.” “Alright, I promise not to give you a hard time, and I would love to see the girls, in fact can I see them when they get back with Linda?” “Of course you can, as a matter of fact Ryan has something for you. She wouldn’t leave the house this morning till it was finished.” “Alright, call me when they get back.” Mark said smiling. “Again I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” “You didn’t, you scared me a little but it’s nothing I won’t get over.” “Damn I didn’t want to do that either.” Mark said angry with himself. “Mark what did you expect you grabbed me and pulled me into a room. I didn’t know who it was, I’ve never seen you like that.” Shayna heard him sigh and wished she could make all his pain and frustration go away. “Do you want me to talk to Uncle Vince and switch you for somebody else?” Shayna asked. “No, it’s fine. I’ll be alright. I can do this. Just do me a favor and be careful. Some of the guys here are going to test you and push your buttons every chance they get. For the most part you, you have the better ones. But a couple are complete assholes.” “Which ones? So I know who to watch out for.” “Let’s see Heyman can be a real asshole, Brock is Brock, you’ve got some of the older wrestlers, like Hogan, Nash and I, then you’ve got Matt Hardy Lita, Stacy Kiebler. Didn’t you get a list.?” “Yes, but I didn’t look at it yet I wanted to unpack first.” “Shayna if anybody gives you any real problems promise that you’ll come to me.” “Mark I don’t need you to fight my battles for me. I’m capable of doing this job. If Vince didn’t think so he wouldn’t have asked me.” Shayna said quietly. “I know but I’m talking about harassment. I didn’t like the way some of the guys were eyeing you up.” “I promise if anything does anything I’ll let you know if I can’t handle it.” Shayna said grinning. “I just wanted to tell you I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me.” “I do…I like I said I didn’t come here to torture you.” “I better go before this turns into another discussion about our relationship or lack of I should say. Just remember I love you. I’ll be here when your ready.” Mark whispered. “Mark?” “Yeah darlin.” He said closing his eyes. “Thanks!” “For what?” “For understanding. Or Trying to understand at least.” “I haven’t much of a choice. Not if I want things to work out with us.” “I’ll call you when the girls get back.” “Alright, I can’t wait to see them.” Mark said before hanging up the phone. Shayna hung up the phone and laid back on her bed. What was she thinking by agreeing to this. It was going to end up causing more heart ache then either of them needed. Shayna got up and began to unpack her bags hanging up her business suites so they wouldn’t wrinkle. Once she was done she took enough out of the girls bags for a day or two. “She was looking through the files Steph had given her when there was a knock on her door. “Coming” she called out getting up and walking towards the door. She opened it to find Ryan bouncing around. “Mama wait till you see what we got.” She said running into the room. “I hope they didn’t break you.” Shayna said smiling Linda carried a sleeping Samantha into the room. “They were very polite and courteous. You’ve done a good job with them.” Linda said laying Samantha down. “Thank you Aunt Linda, that means a lot to me.” Shayna said quietly. “Sweetheart what’s wrong?” Linda asked seeing the sadness in her nieces eyes. “It’s nothing, I’ll get through it.” Shayna said quietly. “Honey, you can talk to me.” “How much do you know about what happened when Mark was staying at the cabin?” “Not much, the girls talked about him a lot. Why is that what is bothering you? Working with Mark I mean?” Shayna looked down at her hands and shook her head. “We got really close while he was there. Then he told me his wife had the baby and had to go back to take care of some stuff. He said he was going to come back. I told him not to bother. To go home and forget about the girls and I.” “Shayna, did something happen between you and Mark?” Shayna shook her head and looked at Linda. “You love him don’t you.” “More then I’ve ever loved anyone in my entire life, I’m just so afraid.” Shayna whispered. “Of what Sweetie?” Linda asked gently. “Of being hurt, of him deciding I’m not what he wants. That he’s going to decide to go back to Sara.” “Shayna that isn’t going to happen. If you love him and he loves you things will work out, you just have to believe in him and trust him. Trust is something that has always been hard for you but you have to try. My marriage to your Uncle hasn’t always been easy but I love him despite all of his faults, all of the cheating. Most woman would have left, but I love him and I know he loves me. You just have to have faith sweetheart.” Linda said taking Shayna into her arms and holding her close. “I love you sweetie, just as much as I love Steph and Shane. If you ever need me all you have to do is pick up the phone.” “I love you too.” Shayna whispered hugging Linda back. “Mommy is Marky here?” “Yes honey, he is. Would you like to go see him?” “YES!” Ryan yelled jumping up and down waking Samantha up. Samantha started crying and Shayna went to pick her up. “How about you little one, do you want to go see Marky?” Shayna asked kissing her forehead. “yes” Samantha said sleepily. “You know honey, children are a very good judge of character. And your children seem very taken with Mark, I think you should take that into consideration as you work this through your mind.” Linda said smiling as she picked up her purse. “I’m going to finish making arrangements for tonight. In that bag on the bed you’ll find two dresses for the girls and an outfit for you. I took the liberty of spoiling you too.” She added kissing Shayna’s cheek. “Thanks Aunt Linda?” “For what honey.” “For raising me after my parents died. I don’t think I ever thanked you.” Shayna whispered with a watery smile. “There is no need for thanks, I love you. I don’t just have two children I have three.” Linda said touching Shayna’s cheek before walking out the door. “Okay girls, let’s go see Mark.” Shayna said taking Ryan’s hand. Shayna walked down the hall and found Mark coming out of his room with Glenn. “MARKY.” Ryan yelled letting go of Shayna’s hands and racing to jump up in Marks arms. “Hey Peanut. I missed you.” Mark said kissing her cheek. “I missed you too, I made something for you.” Ryan said reaching for the piece of paper her mother was holding in her purse. Shayna smiled and handed her daughter the piece of paper. She had no idea what Ry had drawn. Her daughter refused to let her see it. Ryan took the piece of paper from her mother and handed it to Mark. “I made it all by myself.” Ryan said proudly. “This is absolutely beautiful, Who is that?” Mark asked pointing to one of the stick figures. “That’s me, and that’s Samantha, and you and mommy.” Ry explained pointing out the people in the picture. Mark smiled as he looked over the picture, “Ryan what are mommy and I doing?” “Your kissing.” Ryan said with a giggle. Mark looked over at Glenn when he chuckled. Shayna closed her eye and groaned. “Well I know what you were doing in West Virginia.” Glenn said smirking. “I think this is the best picture anyone has ever given me, thank you peanut.” Mark said kissing Ryan’s cheek and setting her down when Samantha started fussing trying to jump out of her mothers arms and into Mark’s. “Your welcome, Who is he?” Ryan asked finally noticing Glenn. “That is my best friend Glenn, but you would know him as Kane.” “Where’s your mask?” Ryan asked eyeing him suspiciously not quite believing he was Kane. “I only wear my mask in the ring or when I make public appearances.” Glenn said bending down to Ryan’s level. “Oh.” Ry said turning back to Mark. “I told you if I cried enough Momma would let us see you.” Ryan whispered to him. “Did you give your mama a hard time?” Mark asked as Samantha layed her head on his shoulder. “No to big of a hard time, just a little.” Ryan said holding her fingers inches apart. Mark looked at Shayna for confirmation. “She wasn’t too bad.” Shayna said quietly. “She just missed you.” “How about we go get some Ice Cream.” Mark suggested to the girls. “Can mommy come?” Samantha asked. “If she wants to, but I think you Mommy needs some time to talk to Stephanie and get some things straightened out about her new job.” “Are you sure Mark? You don’t have to watch them.” Shayna said looking at him. “I know I don’t, I want to.” “Alright, I’ll see you later.” Shayna said smiling as Ryan took Marks hand. “I’ve got something to do too.” Glenn said reaching his hand out to Shayna, “I’m looking forward to working with you. If you need anything please don’t hesitate to ask.” “Thank you Glenn, I won’t and I look forward to working with you as well.” Shayna said shaking his hand. Shayna and Mark watched as Glenn walked off down the hallway. “How about we walk you to Stephanie’s room.” Mark offered. “I want ice cream.” Samantha said bouncing on Mark’s hip. “Go on take them for ice cream, I’ll be fine.” Shayna said smiling at him. “We won’t be long, did the girls bring their swim suites?” “No, I forgot them. It wasn’t easy packing they kept throwing things in that they didn’t need.” Shayna said laughing. “Guess what girls, not only are we going for ice cream, but we are going shopping and when we get back we’ll go swimming in the pool.” Mark said tickling Samantha. Shayna reached into her purse automatically for her wallet and stopped when Mark took her hand. “Don’t, I want to do this.” He said gently. “Mark…” “Why are you always arguing with me?” he asked with a grin. “Because I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t.” Shayna said laughing “Go on, get some work done.” “Alright you two be good for Mark and don’t drive him crazy.” Shayna said kissing each of the girls on the cheek and turning to walk down the hall. “Mommy…” “What Ry?” Shayna said turning around. “Aren’t you forgetting somebody?” Shayna looked at Mark and noticed the evil gleam in his eyes. “Yes Mommy aren’t you forgetting somebody?” Mark asked innocently. “You are sooo bad.” She said reaching up to kiss him on the cheek, Mark turned his head and brushed his lips against hers. “But I’m good at it.” He whispered pulling her close. “Go on.” He added swatting her on the butt and taking Ryan’s hand again. Shayna walked down the hall hearing her daughter sing “Mommy and Marky in the tree kissing…” “Ryan Malissa…” “Uhh ohh she said both names.” Ryan said pulling Mark down the hallway. She turned and watched them and could hear Marks laughter even after they were out of sight. “I’m in trouble.” She said continuing on her way. She was almost to Stephanie’s room when she heard her name being called. “Yes?” She said turning to find Chris Jericho jogging up to her. “Miss. McMahon, I just wanted to say what a pleasure it is going to be to be under your command.” “My name is Shayna and I’m not here to “Command” anyone. I’m here to do a job Mr. Jericho.” “Please call me Chris, I was wondering if you’d like to have dinner with me one night.” “Chris thank you for the offer but I don’t date my employee’s. It only causes problems.” Shayna said fighting the urge to roll her eyes. “Well you know it could be kept just between us, a little fun now and then. Wouldn’t hurt anyone.” “It might get you killed.” Shayna thought to herself her thoughts automatically going to Mark. “Mr. Jericho, as I stated thank you for the offer but the answer is NO.” Shayna said stepping back when he stepped towards her. “Now if you would please excuse me I’m supposed to meet Stephanie.” “Are you sure about that? We could be good together. You’ve got one hell of a body. It’s a shame you cover it up with so many clothes.” Chris said continuing his advances. “Hey Chris, what’s going on?” Paul said coming up behind him and slapping him rather hard on the back. Shayna looked into Paul’s eyes and knew he had heard the entire conversation. “Uhh nothing? I was just…umm offering Miss. McMahon my services, you know show her the ropes around here.” Chris said stammering. “Well buddy…It sounded to me like you were offering to show her a little more then the ropes.” Paul said seriously as he tightened his grip on Chris’s shoulder, you would never have noticed it unless Chris wouldn’t have winced. “I suggest you let Miss. McMahon be. I don’t think Vince would like it very much if he knew you were making unwanted advances towards his niece.” “I apologize, I was wrong if you’ll excuse me...I think I forgot something in my room.” Chris said turning and walking away. “Thank you. I was beginning to feel a little uncomfortable.” “Your welcome, Paul LeVesque.” He said smiling down at her. “You’re the Paul Steph talks about so much.” Shayna said shaking his hand. “I would hope so, unless she’s dating another Paul that I don’t know about.” “I highly doubt that.” Shayna said laughing. “Where were you headed?” Paul asked as Shayna started walking. “Actually I was headed to see Steph.” “So was I, why don’t I walk with you.” “Thank you I would like that.” Shayna said as they got into the elevator. “I met your girls in the lobby with Mark, they are cute. Seemed very attached to Mark.” “Yes, Mark is Ryan’s idol. They love him to death.” “I didn’t realize you knew Mark.” “Yes, Mark came to stay in my cabin while he was on leave and we got to know each other. The girls got attached very quickly to him.” “Well I can tell you it’s not one sided that’s for sure.” “You can say that again, it’s funny he acts more like a father then theirs does.” Shayna said stepping out of the elevator. “What do you mean? Isn’t their father involved in their life?” “Only when it’s convienent or when he thinks he can use them against me.” Shayna said sadly. “Well from what I saw, Mark loves those girls as if he WAS their father. You should have seen him showing them off downstairs.” Paul said as they stopped in front of the room he shared with Stephanie. Paul opened the door and held it in for Shayna. “Hey babe look who I found lurking around.” “I wasn’t lurking around, I was on my way to see you when Paul had to save me.” “Save you from what?” Stephanie asked laughing as she gave Shayna a hug. “From the evil clutches of the self proclaimed “King Of The World”, Jericho was offering Shayna his services.” Paul explained. “Oh god! I see trouble on the horizon, And he’s on your list.” “Don’t worry about it, I can handle Chris Jericho.” “If he gets out of hand you have my permission to fire his ass.” “I don’t think it will have to come to that.” Shayna said laughing. “Well ladies, I’m going to grab a work out at the arena with Randy. I’ll talk to you later.” Paul said grabbing his bag. “Bye baby” Steph said kissing him before he left. “Oh god you guy’s are sickening.” Shayna laughed. “Oh yeah I bet you and Mark are just as sickening.” Steph said without thinking. “Stephanie, how did you know about Mark and I?” Shayna asked her head snapping Steph’s direction. “I…uhh…I just figured something was going on by his reaction when you walked into the meeting today. I mean he nearly choked on the water he was drinking.” Stephanie said attempting to cover her ass. Her father was going to kill her. “Steph, cut the bullshit. Why am I really here?” Shayna said stepping towards Steph. “Because Shane is taking a leave of Absence. Daddy wouldn’t trust anyone other then family, not after the disasters we’ve had in the past.” “That better be all there is to it, because If I find out that you or Uncle Vince are trying to play match maker I will be extremely pissed.” “Shayna, what is so wrong with being with Mark? He’s a good guy. He obviously loves you and he loves the girls and they love him.” “Because HE’S MARRIED” Shayna said with a low growl. “A minor technicality.” Steph told her dismissing the excuse. “He’s filed for divorce.” “Steph…I am asking you not only as my cousin to stay out of this, Let me work through this on my own.” “Shayna what are you afraid of? Mark is not Andy.” “I know that Steph. Mark is the exact opposite. He loves me and he loves the girls. He loves us unconditionally. I’m so afraid of letting him in then it not working out. If it was just me I wouldn’t even think twice about it, but I have the girls to consider. I can’t have them become attached and then Mark leave.” “Sweetheart I have news for you, they already are. Your only hurting your self and them by not letting go. Mark has been a mess since he came back. I think you need to take a chance on him. If you don’t you could be making the biggest mistake of your life.” Stephanie said gently. “I’ll think about it.” Shayna said know Stephanie was right. “Oh daddy called and said he’s taken the liberty of hiring a nanny to travel with us to make it easier when your working. He’s set up three interviews in Oklahoma City, when we get there.” “I never thought about what I was going to do when I’m working?” Shayna said laughing. “Well I suggest that we get to work, I have a lot to go over with you.” Shayna and Stephanie worked for three hours going over employee files, Stephanie explained everything that had changed since Shayna had been living in West Virginia. “I know it’s a lot to remember but if you need to ask don’t hesitate. You’ll get the hang of it really quick.” Stephanie said handing Shayna the employee files that were under her. “God I can’t believe how late it is, we better start getting ready for the party. I still have to find Mark and the girls.” Shayna said standing up. “I’m really glad you’re here, I’ve really missed you.” Steph said quietly. “I’ve missed you too. I’m glad I decided to do this. Thanks for the pep talk earlier.” “What are cousins for if not to tell you the truth when you need it most.” Steph said giving Shayna a hug as Paul walked into the room followed by Linda and Vince. “There are my girls.” Vince said wrapping an arm around each one of them. “Hi Uncle Vince.” Shayna said leaning into him “What are you two up to?” he asked seeing the folders in Shayna’s hands. “Stephanie was showing me the ends and outs.” Shayna responded giving him a smile. “Wow, starting work already. I’m impressed.” “I’m here to do a job and intend on doing it well. I can’t do that if I don’t know anything now can I.” “Your just like your dad, he’d be proud of you.” Vince said kissing her forehead. “Thanks Uncle Vince, I’m going to go find Mark and the girls and get them ready for the party tonight.” “Already done, I stopped by your room and Mark was just getting them out of the bathtub and dressing them.” Linda said winking at her. “Thank you Aunt Linda.” Shayna said grinning. “Are you going to the party with Mark?” Vince asked nonchalantly. “UNCLE VINCE…Don’t push it. I know what’s going on here. Do I look like I was born yesterday?” “It was just a question sweetie.” He said trying his best to look innocent, the grin on his face giving him away. “MEN!” Shayna grumbled with a smile as she walked out of Stephanie’s room. Shayna went up to her room and before she got halfway down the hall’s she could hear the girls giggling and Mark Roaring like a monster. She leaned against the wall to listen. She hadn’t heard her children sound this happy in a long time. It was like music to her ears. Maybe family was right. Maybe she should just give into Mark so they all could be happy together. Sighing Shayna opened the door to find Mark wrestling with the girls. “What in the world?” She asked laughing, the girls were piled on top of Mark. Samantha was bouncing on his stomach and Ryan was sitting on his chest. “I think we have a couple of future wrestlers here.” Mark said breathing heavily as Shayna pulled the girls off of him. “It wouldn’t surprise me.” Shayna said laughing as she sent the girls through the connecting door that lead to their room. “Did you get some work done.” Mark said pulling his shirt down as he got off Shayna’s bed. “Yes I did. Thank you.” “Your welcome, I heard you had a problem earlier.” “How the hell did you hear that.” “Paul told me, he wouldn’t tell me who it was just what happened. Are you alright?” He asked pulling her into his arms and wrapping them around her waist. “Yes, I just felt uncomfortable.” Shayna said allowing her self to relax against him. “Who was it?” “I’m not going to tell you that. I don’t think he’ll bother me again. Paul took care of it. If he does. I’ll handle it.” “Shayna…” “I mean it Mark, stay out of it. I don’t want to have to suspend you for tearing somebody in two.” “You wouldn’t…” Mark said looking down at her. “No I wouldn’t but I would have to do something, I can’t show favoritism.” “I don’t like the idea of somebody harassing you.” “Mark I’m fine, if it happens again I’ll handle it, and if I can’t then I’ll let Uncle Vince handle it.” “You can be so infuriating at times.” Mark said sighing. “Yeah so are you, you’ll just learn to deal with it.” Shayna said smiling. “Does that mean your thinking…what I think your thinking?” Mark said hopefully. “Maybe…Let’s just see what happens alright.” “A maybe is better then a flat out no. A maybe I can deal with.” “Did you have fun?” “Yes we had a blast the girls had fun swimming. I hung their suites up in the bathroom. They’ve had their baths.” “Thank you, your too good to me.” “I love you what can I say.” He whispered leaning down and kissing her gently. Shayna kissed him back without hesitation. She had missed being in his arms a few kisses wouldn’t hurt anything. “So Miss. McMahon would you allow me to escort you to the party tonight?” Shayna looked up at him thoughtfully. “I would like that Mr. Callaway.” “Should I consider it a date then?” Mark asked with a huge grin. “Yes, you can consider it a date.” Shayna said laughing. “How about we seal it with a kiss.” Mark whispered leaning down. “I thought you’d never ask.” Shayna whispered her heart pounding madly. Mark captured her lips in a gentle kiss, Shayna ran her fingers into his hair pulling him closer as Mark slipped his tongue between her lips causing her to groan as their tongues dueled. Mark couldn’t get enough of her it had been so long since he’d made love to her. Cupping her ass with his hands he pulled her against him so she could feel what he was doing to him. It was Marks turn to groan when she rubbed her pelvis against the bulge in his pants. “Damn Shayna, your going to be the death of me.” He whispered releasing her lips. “Mark…I know this isn’t easy you and you’ll never know how much I appreciate your patience with my craziness.” “Honey your not crazy your just afraid and I can understand that. Hell, we didn’t meet under the best circumstances and I’m not even divorced yet. Maybe it’s best that we don’t jump into anything until we are both free of the past.” Mark said gently. “Did you know that your one of the sweetest men I’ve ever known.” “Shh…Don’t tell anyone I have a reputation to keep, I’m the American Bad Ass remember.” Mark said grinning. “Your secret is safe with me.” Shayna said kissing him again. “I better go start getting ready, I have something to do before tonight.” Mark said stroking her cheek with his knuckles. “I’ll see you about 6:45 then?” “Sounds good, love you” Mark said walking out the door with a smile. “I love you too.” Shayna whispered to the empty room. Mark walked down the hall to his room with a huge grin on his face, they weren’t in the clear yet but it was a start. Sooner or later they would be together. He wasn’t giving up on her. She was everything he’d ever wanted. “Hey Mark, what’s up?” Torrie said passing him. “Not much Torrie…Hey Torrie are you busy right now?” “No why?” “I could use your help with something? It’s kind of personal.” “Sure Mark, What do you need help with?” She asked. “I need to get a present for someone, and I need a woman’s opinion.” “Oooo I love shopping, especially when it’s for someone else. I’m all yours.” She said linking arms with him. ~Chapter 10~ Shayna was putting the finishing touches on her make up when their was a knock on the door. She’d already had the girls dressed and their hair done. Glancing at the clock she smiled. “6:45, always on time.” She said laughing as she opened the door. “WOW. Where ever did you get that dress?” Mark said his jaw hitting the floor. “Aunt Linda bought it for me. Do you like?” She asked turning around. “You look gorgeous.” He said dropping a kiss on her lips once she had closed the door. “Thank you so do you…I never pictured you as dress pants and silk shirt type, but you look really good in it.” “There is a lot about me you don’t know darlin’ I can’t give away all my secrets now can I?” “I’ll remember that, I have a few secrets of my own.” She said settling her hands on his chest. “I have something for you.” He said with a twinkle in his eye. “A present?” Shayna asked getting excited. “Yep…maybe I’ll wait till later to give it to you.” Mark said walking past her. “Mark Callaway don’t you dare tease me like that.” Shayna said laughing. “Alright…but you have to promise not to get mad.” “What did you do?” “It’s just a little something to show you how much you mean to me. And to show you I’m serious about waiting for you.” “Mark you didn’t have to do that.” Shayna said as he handed her the box that had been beautifully wrapped. Sat on the end of the bed and carefully opened the box to find a delicate gold chain with a pendant holding three diamonds. “Mark it’s beautiful.” Shayna whispered tears stinging her eyes. “Wait there is more, I can’t take all the credit. Torrie Wilson helped me pick it out. Look underneath.” Mark said taking a deep breath. Shayna gasped when she lifted the protective padding. Underneath was another pendant this one holding not three diamonds but four. Shayna looked up at Mark a million questions floating around in her head. “When your ready you won’t have to say anything, just exchange the pendants and I’ll know. This one symbolizes you and the girls and this one.” He said picking up the pendant with the four diamonds. “Symbolizes all of us.” Mark said holding it gently in his palm. Shayna didn’t know what to say, she was afraid to open her mouth for fear of starting to cry all over him. “If you don’t like it we can go pick something else out.” Mark said nervously. “I love it, thank you...” Shayna whispered taking his lips in a gentle kiss. “Your not mad?” he asked taking the necklace from her to put it around her neck. “How could I be mad, nobody has ever given me something this beautiful.” “I’m glad you like it. It maybe beautiful but it doesn’t compare to you.” “Mommy…” Ryan said coming into the room. “Yeah sweetheart.” Shayna said looking at her daughter. “Now that Marky is here can we PLEASE go to the party?” she asked impatiently. “Yes, go get your sister and we can go.” Shayna said laughing. “Yippy.” Ryan said running back into her room to retrieve her sister. Shayna took the other pendent from Mark and secured it in the box. “Who did you tell Torrie this was for?” Shayna asked. “I told her it was for which intrigued her, I ended up telling her the story of how we met.” “Remind me to thank her, she has very good taste” “I know that is why I took her with me. Don’t worry I swore her to secrecy. You can trust Torrie.” Mark said smiling. “Like people aren’t going to think things when we show up at the party together.” Shayna said laughing. “Most of them know I was up in West Virginia while I was out, and I’m sure by my reaction today at the meeting they are wondering why I spit water all over Glenn.” “And why you were giving Matt Hardy a look that would make most people shit their pants.” “Opps…didn’t think you saw that.” “I saw it. I might have done the same thing if it was me in your position.” “I’ll try to control myself, I tend to get a little jealous.” Mark admitted. “You have nothing to be jealous about. I mean Matt is cute but he’s not my type.” Shayna said as Ryan and Samantha walked in. “And exactly is your type, my sweet?” “The American Bad Ass type.” Shayna said laughing when Mark rolled his eyes. “Let’s go.” he said picking up Ryan when she reached her arms up to him. “I’m going to be the luckiest man at the party tonight.” “How come?” Ryan asked. “Because I don’t have one beautiful woman on my arm tonight I have three.” He said tickling her. When Shayna and Mark walked into the ballroom at the hotel they were greeted by several people. They also received several curious looks. “You look beautiful sweetheart.” Vince said kissing Shayna on the cheek. “Well thank you.” “By the way honey the hotel has a babysitting service I arranged for someone to watch the girls around 9:00, I hope you don’t mind.” “Not at all I wondered what I was going to do when they started getting cranky. I think I’m going to go talk to everyone, Ryan and Samantha why don’t you come with me. I think I see the Rock over there.” “Cool do you think he’ll do that thing with is eye.” Ry asked giggling. “I don’t know honey, maybe.” Shayna said smiling as Vince got up. She was wondering where he was going when she noticed him walk over to Dewayne. Vince said something, pointed to Ryan and Dewayne nodded laughing. Vince walked back over to the table giving Shayna a grin. “Come on Marky.” Ryan said grabbing his hand. “I’ll come over in a little bit, you go with mommy I have to talk to your Uncle Vince.” Shayna walked off with the girls and Mark turned back to Vince and Linda. “Something happened today that I think you should be aware of.” “It’s nothing serious I hope.” “I don’t know, Paul mentioned it to me but wouldn’t tell me who it involved. Apparently one of the boy’s decided to proposition Shayna. When I asked her about it she wouldn’t tell me who. Said she’d handle it herself and if she couldn’t she’d come to you. Paul handled it today, but I’m just worried about it getting out of hand, he’s the only one who knows about it and he’s not going to be around to stop it all the time.” “I’m glad you told me about it, I’ll talk to Paul and see what I can find out. I’ll have him keep an eye out. Don’t take it personally. Shayna has always been the type to handle her own problems. She doesn’t like outside interference unless she asks for it.” “I figured as much. I still thought you should know.” Shayna and the girls were just about finished mingling when they came upon the Rock. “Well hi there little lady.” Dewayne said bending down to Ryan and Samantha’s level. “I saw the Scorpion King, It was really scary.” “You saw the Scorpion King?” Dewayne asked surprised. “Her father let her watch it, she had nightmares for a week afterwards.” Shayna said laughing. “That is a very beautiful dress you have on.” Dewayne said. “Thank you Mr. Rock.” “Very polite to, but you can call me Dewayne, that is my real name.” “You look like a Dewayne.” Ryan said thoughtfully. “I do?” Dewayne asked giving her the peoples eyebrow. “Mommy did you see that? He did it, he gave me the peoples eyebrow.” Ryan said giggling. “I seen it honey.” “Can we go sit with Marky now?” “Of course you can, hold your sisters hand please.” “Come on sissy let’s go tell Marky the rock gave us the eyebrow.” “Marky?” Dewayne asked trying not to laugh. “Don’t ask me, she started it one day and hasn’t stopped. He’s never corrected her so I guess it’s okay with him.” “Boy am I going to have fun with that one.” “Shayna this is my wife Dani? Dani Shayna McMahon, Vince’s Niece. She’s taking over for Shane while he out with Marissa.” “It’s very nice to meet you, you have to very beautiful little girls.” Thank you, I understand you have a daughter yourself.” Yes, her name is Simone.” Dani said smiling.” “It is not, it’s Pebbles.” Dewayne said grinning. Dani rolled her eyes at her husband. “Men! He refuses to call her anything but Pebbles.” “I think it’s cute.” “Personally I think he does it to irritate my mother.” “She’s so easy to pick on I can’t help it.” Dewayne said laughing. “If you ever need someone to keep an eye on the girls just let me know. We’ve decided while Simone is young we are going to travel as much as possible with Dewayne. That way he doesn’t miss out on too much of her growing up.” “Thank you, I may just take you up on that. The girls would love someone to play with.” “You two have a great time.” Shayna said spotting Torrie. Shayna left Dewayne and Dani and walked over to where Torrie was talking to Stacie. “Hi girls, I just wanted to stop and say hi. I didn’t get to talk to you earlier today.” Shayna said smiling. “You were awfully busy we didn’t want to overwhelm you.” Stacie said shaking Shayna’s hand. “I was a little nervous.” Shayna admitted. “Don’t worry you’ll do a great job.” Torrie said taking a sip of her drink. Stacie nodded in agreement and reached out to the necklace Shayna was wearing. “What a beautiful necklace.” “Thank you, it was a gift from a friend.” “Well he has good taste, I can tell you that.” “Yes he does, and so does the person who helped him pick it out.” Shayna said winking at Torrie. “There is Adam, if you’ll excuse me. I need to speak to him for a moment.” Stacie said excusing her self. “I wanted to thank you for helping Mark pick out the necklace, it’s perfect.” “I’m glad you like it, It looks great on you. I think you should know I picked this one out, he picked the other pendant out. Which I thought was very romantic.” “Yes it is, he’s totally different from what I pictured him to be, I mean before I met him.” “Not many people know the side of Mark that you and I’ve seen. He tends to be a very private person when it comes to his emotions as well as his private life.” “You sound like the two of you are close.” Shayna said glancing across the room to where Mark was talking with a few of the guys. Torrie smiled and nodded. “Mark has helped me out of a few rough spots, you’ll never meet a more caring man than Mark Callaway. He’s become a very dear friend. I’m glad to see him finally finding some happiness. That bitch Sara really did a number on him. I truly believe if Vince hadn’t stepped in when he did Mark would have went over the edge.” “You’ve met her, what’s she like?” “Who Sara?” “Yes, I mean I know what happened and everything but he’s never talked about her other than to tell me about what ended their marriage.” “Sara is only 22, and for being so young she’s a cold hearted bitch in my opinion. She’s ruthless, she’ll do anything and everything to keep Mark right where she wants him. Please don’t let that deter you from having a relationship with him. He loves you more than you could ever know.” “I won’t, there is just so much at risk.” Shayna said with a sigh. Torrie looked at Shayna and smiled. “There is always a risk when it comes to loving someone, but loving someone is better than being alone and wondering what if for the rest of your life.” “You know what Torrie…I think you and I are going to become very good friends.” “I hope so, if you ever need someone to talk to I’m always here.” “Thanks. I’ll see you later.” The rest of the night was going along smoothly and Shayna was having a wonderful time. She had successfully been able to avoid Chris Jericho thanks to Paul who had interceded every time Jericho had made a move to go towards Shayna. She felt bad though Paul should be enjoying the party instead of playing bodyguard. The night was almost over when Mark came up to Shayna where she stood talking to Torrie and Stephanie. “Care to dance?” He asked extending his hand. Shayna looked up at him and smiled. “I would love to.” Mark led her out onto the dance floor and held her close. Their were several other couples dancing. Shayna closed her eyes and enjoyed being in Marks arms. The next thing she knew somebody had her by the back of the hair. “Bitch you better get your hands off my husband.” A voice snarled from behind her. “Sara what the hell are you doing here?” Mark yelled angrily trying to pull Shayna behind him. “Now I know why you want a divorce, how long have you been sleeping with this whore.” Sara screamed. Shayna hearing Sara call her a whore saw red, jumping in front of Mark she got right in Sara’s face. “Whore? You of all people are calling me a whore. I highly suggest you get the fuck outta of here. You were not invited to this party, and unless you want your ass kicked you will get out of my face.” “If you think you can take me let’s go, because I will guarantee you won’t last very long.” “She obviously doesn’t know Shayna does she.” Shane said to his father as they both walked up. Mark was trying to pull Shayna back as Glen was trying to restrain Sara. “Vince, I’m still under contract right?” Sara asked turning to him. “Unfortunately yes.” Vince said regretting he’d ever signed her to a per match basis. He’d only done it so she could appear in the ring with Mark. “Then I want this slut in the ring.” “You’ve got it.” Shayna said struggling against Mark’s hold. “WHAT?” Mark said in shock. “You heard me, If she wants a match she’s got it.” “Shayna are you sure? It’s been a long time since you’ve wrestled.” Shane whispered in her ear. “I’m positive, this bitch is going down.” Shayna snarled looking at Sara. “You heard her, she wants it dad what do we do.” “Sara I’ll let you know when the match is going to be, It won’t be for awhile, we’ve got things we have to set up first.” Vince said rubbing his jaw. “For now get out of here and if you come anywhere near Shayna before the match I’ll press charges on you myself.” Vince said motioning for Glenn to take her out. Mark waited until Sara was escorted out of the room before turning Shayna around forcefully. “Are you fucking nuts…She’s going to kill you.” “Thanks for the vote of confidence.” Shayna said jerking back from him. “Shayna have you ever wrestled before.” “Mark that is a really stupid question. I’m a McMahon what do you think. Don’t worry about it. I’ll do this on my own.” Shayna said walking out of the ballroom Steph and Torrie following close behind her. “Shayna wait up.” Stephanie said catching up to her. “I think this is a very bad idea. Sara Callaway is ruthless when it comes to the ring. She doesn’t play by the rules. This could turn into a bloody brawl. “Steph, it would be really nice if at least you would support me on this. You of all people should know that I’m not about to let her get away with embarrassing me like that and I’m not about to let her get away with pulling this crap with Mark. She started something and I’m going to finish it.” Shayna said as Mark came up. “Shayna we need to talk.” Mark said seriously. “There is nothing to talk about, I’m doing it and none of you are going to stop me.” Shayna said turning her eyes to him. “Shayna if you want help training I’ll help you.” Torrie said quietly. “Torrie your not helping matters.” “Mark give it a rest. Sara has caused enough trouble for you. Somebody needs to put an end to it. Who better than the woman you love.” Torrie said irritated by his attitude. “Your serious about doing this aren’t you?” Mark said running his hand across his face. “Dead serious.” “I don’t want any part of it, this is crazy.” Mark said walking off leaving Shayna standing there with her mouth hanging open. “MARK!” Shayna called out. Mark continued walking. If she wanted to get herself hurt because Sara wanted to cause problems so be it, he wasn’t going to be around to watch. He couldn’t believe Vince had agreed to it. “Shayna, let him go. He’s upset right now. He doesn’t want you to get hurt.” Torrie said gently. “Or he doesn’t want his precious wife to get hurt.” Shayna said angrily. “You know that’s not true so don’t even go there.” Stephanie piped up. “No? If he loved me like he said he did he would support me on this. Everyone else is.” Shayna said sadly. “Shayna…” Shayna fought the tears that threatened to fall. “I’m going up to my room, I’ll see you guy’s later.” Torrie and Stephanie looked at each other as Shayna walked away and decided that Mark and Shayna were both being stubborn. ~Chapter 11~ It had been four weeks since the party, and between the responsibilities of her job and training Shayna was rarely available Mark hadn’t seen her in a week. He spent what free time he had with the girls who constantly asked for their mother. Mark tried to explain to them that she was busy with work. Ryan being older was not buying it. Mark was putting the girls to bed one night when Ryan asked again where Shayna was. “She’s working princess.” Mark said setting the book he had been reading to her. “She promised to tuck us in.” Ryan whined. “I know honey, Mommy’s working very hard.” Mark said with a sigh.” “She loves her work more then me.” Ryan pouted. “That isn’t true Ryan, mommy loves you more than anything.” “Then why isn’t she here?” Ryan said with a six year olds logic. “Go to sleep sweetie. I’ll send mommy in when she gets back.” “Okay…I love you Marky.” “I love you too princess.” Mark said leaning down to kiss her on the cheek. Mark looked over at the other bed to find Samantha sound asleep. Turning off the light Mark walked out of the girls room and in to Shayna’s. “It was 9:30 and Mark was getting more angry by the minute. Not only had she promised to be back to tuck her children in she’d promised to have dinner with him and the girls. She hadn’t even called to cancel. It was like this match with Sara was consuming her. He didn’t like it at all, he’d kept quite since the night of the party when Sara had showed up, tonight was another story. He couldn’t keep quiet anymore not when this was beginning to affect the girls. Mark sat back on the bed and waited for her to come home. At 11:00 Shayna finally walked down the hall to her room, all she wanted was a hot shower and her bed. “She’d spent a better part of the day in the ring training with Torrie and a few of the others, Dewayne had even offered his assistance as well as Paul. She opened her door and walked in to find Mark sitting in the dark looking out the window. “What are you doing sitting in the dark?” She asked flipping on the light. “How was dinner?” He asked angrily. “Oh my god! I totally forgot.” She whispered. “Did you forget you made a promise to your kid’s too.” Mark asked standing up and grabbing his leather coat. “Mark…I tried to get back her in time for them to go to bed, I was having trouble with a move and didn’t want to leave until I had it right. I’m sorry.” “Your Sorry?” Mark asked with a bitter laugh. “Mark…” “Don’t Mark me...It’s pretty sad that I spend more time with your kids then you do.” Mark said grabbing her by the shoulders. “Mark that isn’t fair. I’m doing this for us.” “No Shayna…Your doing this for YOU! I told you I didn’t want you doing this match with Sara and your doing it anyway. Besides incase you’ve forgotten there is no US.” “Mark you aren’t being fair.” Shayna said stepping away from him. “No Shayna it’s you who isn’t being fair. I’ve been patient, I’ve taken up with the girls where you left off. You can’t even take a couple hours out of training to spend time with us. If you really wanted there to be an US you’d be doing what you have to do.” “What was I supposed to do Mark, she came in their causing a scene accusing you of having an affair. Assaults me and I’m supposed to let it slide?” Shayna asked getting angry. “That is exactly what you should have done. This is my problem not yours. She’s my wife you should have let me handle it.” “If you feel that way about it, maybe you should be with her then.” “Fuck you Shayna.” Mark said walking past her and out the door. Sank to the bed as the door slammed behind him. She couldn’t believe this was happening. She was doing this to prove to him that she loved him and that she wasn’t going to back down from Sara. She’d already made up her mind that she wanted to be with him. She’d planned on telling him after the match with Sara. At the rate things were going she wasn’t going to get the chance. She was loosing him and their was nothing she could do about it. Shayna got up and walked into her children’s room and sat down on Ryan’s bed. She knew Mark wasn’t angry about spending time with the kid’s, he was angry because she wasn’t. He had every right to be angry. She was shirking her responsibilities and it wasn’t fair to her kids or to him. As much as she wanted to beat Sara Callaway in the match she wanted to be with her kid’s and she didn’t want to loose Mark. Shayna bent down and kissed Ryan then walked over to Samantha and pulled the covers up over her. It could be freezing and Samantha always kicked the covers off. Shayna walked back into her room and headed for the phone. Picking it up she dialed Mark’s room number. It rang four times before Glen picked up. “Hey Glen…sorry to call so late? Is Mark there?” She asked quietly. “Nope, I thought he was in your room with you.” “He was we got into an argument and he stormed out.” Shayna said. Glen could tell Shayna wasn’t her normal cheerful self and became worried. “Did you guy’s argue about the match with Sara again?” “Yes and No, we argued about how much time I’ve been spending training for the match and then it turned into an argument about me agreeing to the match when he didn’t want me to do it.” “What did you say?” “I uhh…told him that if his feelings were so strong about it maybe he should just go back to being with Sara.” Shayna said. “Shayna…” Glen groaned. “Glen he’s not being fair about this. She comes here completely embarrassed both of us and expects me to just let it go. When I told him I was doing it for us he got pissed and told me Sara was his wife and his problem I should stay out of it and then proceeded to throw it in my face that their was no us.” “Shayna do you love Mark?” “Yes Glenn I do, it’s complicated though.” “Nobody said love was easy kiddo.” “Nobody said it was supposed to hurt this much either.” “You guy’s will get through this, just have a little faith.” “Thanks Glenn, when he get’s there tell him I called.” “I will honey, if you need to talk let me know.” “I will… Good night Glenn.” Glenn hung up the phone and looked over at Mark. “You are making a big mistake.” “How can you say that? Sara is going to slaughter her.” “You know what…I’ve come to the conclusion that you are the biggest idiot on the face of the planet.” “What ever.” Mark said rolling his eyes. “I’m serious, you claim to love her yet your not supporting her in this. You should be the one training her. You are the one who taught Sara how to wrestle. Shayna is putting everything on the line to defend what ever it is between the two of you. That tells me right there that she loves you.” “Glenn, just stay out of it alright. Shayna is wrong and nobody is going to tell me differently.” “Well don’t come crying to me when this blows up in your face and you loose her. You’re the most stubborn person I know.” Glen told his friend as he rolled over and turned off the light. ~Chapter 12~ After the big blow up with Mark Shayna had decided to keep the piece she had to cut down on training. Instead of spending most of her day in the ring she spent the morning in the ring and the rest of the day working on actual work and spending time with the girls. Mark still however wasn’t satisfied. They were barely on speaking terms which bothered her. She was pacing in Torrie’s dressing room the night of her match with Sara when their was a knock on the door. “Enter.” Torrie called out handing Shayna a bottle of water. “I just wanted to wish you good luck.” Shayna heard when the door opened. “Shane…I’m so glad you came.” “I wouldn’t have missed it for the world, Your going to do just fine. Your going to go out there and kick ass. Just have a little faith in yourself.” He said giving her a hug. “Thanks, I needed that.” Shayna said with a sigh. She was so nervous. Not just because their was a good possibility she could get her ass kicked but because Mark was refusing to even look in her direction let alone talk to her. “Listen Shayna I know what’s going on with Mark, he’s worried about you.” Shane said. “Yeah? Is that why when Glenn wished me luck, Mark said I was going to need it.” “Shayna he’s being a man.” Torrie said gently. “Hey hey…I happen to be a man.” Shane said with a grin. “You know what I mean.” Torrie said laughing as another knock sounded at the door. “Miss. McMahon your up in five.” One of the backstage personnel said quietly. “Thank you Jon, I’ll be right there.” She responded taking a deep breath. “Stop worrying your going to be fine, I’m going to be right there with you.” Torrie said with a smile. “Mind a little extra company ringside?” Shane asked “I would love it, Steph is going to be there too.” “Good let’s go.” Shayna walked out into the hall and to the black curtain, Sara was already in the ring and running her mouth. She was just about to step through the curtain when she felt a hand on her shoulder. When she turned around she saw Glenn standing there. “If you get in trouble I’m coming down there to help you out.” Glenn said seriously. “Thanks Glenn I would rather do this myself though.” Shayna whispered hating the fact that it was Glenn and not Mark offering his help. “All the same honey, I’ll be there should you need me.” He said seriously. Shayna nodded as the music Steph and Trish had picked out for her entrance theme started. Taking a deep breath she walked through the curtain praying she made it out of the ring alive. She knew Sara Callaway was out for blood…her blood. Mark stalked around his locker room nervously glancing at the monitor every now and then. So far Shayna was holding her own against Sara. Mark knew Sara and knew that any minute now the tables would be turning in her favor. He heard King say something about Sara having a weapon and turned and looked just in time to see Sara hit Shayna in the face with a steel bar. Practically ripping the door of it’s hinges he raced down to ringside. Stephanie was in a panic. Sara had split Shayna’s face wide open and was laughing about as she went for the pin. “Shay…Come on reverse it.” Mark yelled pounding on the mat. Shayna heard Marks voice and found the strength to kick out of the pin. Blood was flowing into her eyes making it nearly impossible to see. Managing to get away from Sara long enough to get out of the ring, she wiped the blood from her eyes as she walked around the ring and then sliding in as Sara went to hit her with a steel chair instead of hitting her she hit the ring post. The ricochet cause Sara to drop the chair. Shayna had climbed to the top rope and did a moonsault onto Sara knocking her to the ground. Shayna was on top of her pounding her face with her fists as the ref continued to count them both out. Letting Sara go Shayna got back in the ring waiting in a defensive stance as Sara got in herself. Sara was pissed that Shayna had gotten the best of her and went after Shayna with a clothesline. Missing she ran into the ropes getting tangled. Shayna knew it was now or never. Releasing Sara from her confinement Shay knocked her to the mat putting the sharpshooter on her. Steph and the rest of her little crew were going crazy as Sara tapped out unable to take the pressure on her lower back anymore. Shayna released her and walked over grabbing the papers and a mic Steph held in her hands. “Sign them now” Shayna said placing the pen in the other woman’s hand. “You Bitch this isn’t over.” Sara growled kicking Shayna in the face. Shayna pounced on her punching her several times before Shane and Mark to jumped into the ring pulling the two woman apart. Shayna fought against Mark’s hold. “Sign them Sara a deal was a deal.” “Sara if you don’t sign those papers you will force us to sue you for breach of contract.” Shane said holding throwing her to the matt when she tried to charge Shayna again. “Do it Sara or I’ll tell everyone here exactly why I’m divorcing your slutty ass.” Mark said quietly while keeping a firm grip on Shayna. “You wouldn’t…” Sara said her face turning white. “You want to test me?” Mark asked raising an eyebrow. “You’re a fucking asshole.” She said grabbing the pen and signing her name then throwing the papers at Shayna and stalking from the ring. Shayna picked up the papers and turned around and pushed them into Mark’s chest and left the ring herself. He was free. She had done what she came to do and now she was going home. By the time Mark and the others got back stage one of the stage hands informed them that Shayna had left the building without changing. Mark looked down at the papers he held in his hands and gave a frustrated sigh. “You don’t get it do you?” Stephanie asked. “Get what?” “She didn’t do this to get revenge on Sara for embarrassing her. She did it so that you would be free, she did it so that you could be happy. She loves you Mark, it’s too bad you don’t love her back because the two of you make a great couple.” Torrie said when Steph didn’t answer. “Damn it I do love her.” Mark growled. “You sure got a funny way of showing it.” Stephanie said finally finding her voice. She knew by the time Mark got back to the hotel Shayna would be on her way back to West Virginia. She’d told her as much that morning. “I’ve gotta talk to her…Try to explain.” “You may be to late, she’s probably already on her way back to West Virginia.” “What do you mean?” Mark asked looking up sharply. “She told dad and I this morning, that either way win or loose she was going home. She couldn’t stay here and see you every day when she knew you had such little faith in her.” Without a word Mark sprinted out of the arena, reaching the parking lot he jumped on his bike and headed back to the hotel. He couldn’t loose her not now that he was finally free of Sara. He loved her more than he’d ever loved another living soul. He had to find away to make her see that. When Mark pulled into the parking lot at the hotel it was just in time to see Shayna putting the girls into the limo. “Shay wait…don’t do this.” He said jumping off his bike. Shayna looked over at him shaking her head sadly. “I can’t continue on like this Mark. As much as I wish I could stay and pretend everything is okay…I can’t. It’s not fair to me and it’s not fair to the girls. They love you and I can’t give them what they want most. So it’s if I just take them home and we go back to the way we were.” She whispered blinking back her tears. Mark felt the lump forming in his throat start choking him. “What way is that Shay?” “Just the three of us.” “Are you ready Miss. McMahon?” the driver asked feeling the tension build. “In just a second.” She said giving him a small smile. Mark wiped his hand across his face. “Can I say goodbye to the girls?” Shayna simply nodded, he wasn’t going to fight for her…for them, he was just going to let her walk away and not try to stop her. It just proved to her that he didn’t love her and probably never had. She watched quietly as Mark kissed each one of the girls and told them that he loved them. Both girls clung to him and begged him to go with them. He tried to explain the best he could, that he couldn’t. “Miss. McMahon we really need to be going if you want to make your plane.” “He’s right Mark, We do need to be going.” Shayna whispered. “Don’t do this Shay…” He said his eyes filling with tears as he looked down at her. “I have to, to much has been said and done…Goodbye Mark.” She said her voice sounding steady and strong as she slipped her ring off her finger trying to put it in his hand. “No…you keep it I got it for you.” “Miss. McMahon…” “I’m coming.” She said turning and glaring at him. “I’ve got to go…take care of yourself Mark.” She whispered reaching up and kissing his cheek. Mark felt his skin burn, it took everything inside of him not to grab her and pull her into his arms as she got into the limo and closed the door. He watched the limo pull away his heart breaking. Shoving his hands into his pocket’s he watched until the tail lights disappeared turning he nearly bumped into Glenn. “You fool you didn’t even try to stop her.” “Goes to show what you know about Shayna McMahon.” Mark said not in the mood to deal with Glenn at the moment. “There is no stopping Shayna once her mind is made up. “Like I said you’re a fool.” Glenn responded turning and walking into the hotel. “Your right…I am.” Mark whispered knowing he’d just lost the best thing to ever happen to him all because of his stubborn pride. ~Chapter 13~ Shayna sat on the couch flipping through a magazine, when the phone rang. It had been six months since they’d come home without Mark. Both girls were still pissed at her constantly bringing up Mark’s name especially Ryan. “Hello?” She said answering the phone. “Miss. McMahon, this is Alicia Thomas…Ryan’s teacher. We seem to have a problem.” She said sounding a little frazzled. “What’s wrong Ms. Thomas?” Shayna asked. “Ryan got into a fight today on the playground. Gave Jimmy Johnson a black eye.” “She punched a boy?” Shayna said shocked. “Yes…After he told her and I quote “the Undertaker sucks.” Do you know why she would do something like this?” “Yes I do, I’ll be up to the school in just a few minutes.” Shayna said upset that her daughter was now fighting in school. She hadn’t realized that this whole situation with Mark would affect her so much. “Thank you Miss. McMahon.” Shana hung up the phone and headed out the door. An hour later she pulled back into the driveway a sulking Ryan beside her. Shayna had been so upset when she got to the school she decided to wait until they got home to discuss it. “Ryan why did you punch Jimmy.” She asked turning in her seat. “He said Marky sucked momma… and he doesn’t he’s the best wrestler and the best dad in the whole world.” “Ryan for the last time…Mark is not your father.” Shayna whispered they had been over this a million times and Ryan refused to accept the fact that Mark wasn’t apart of their lives any more. “He could be but you won’t let him…you won’t even let us talk to him” Shayna saw the tears forming in her little girls eyes and it broke her heart. “Ry honey, I know you miss Mark…I miss him too, but sometimes things just don’t work out the way we want them too.” “I hate you…” Ryan yelled jumping from the car and racing into the house. Shayna leaned her head back against the seat. The situation with her oldest child wasn’t getting any better and she didn’t see it doing so anytime soon. Pulling out her cell phone she dialed Steph’s number. “Hey Steph, how is the wonderful world of wrestling?” She asked quietly. “Hey Shay, it’s good. How are you and the girls doing?” “Things aren’t so hot right now. Ryan just got suspended from school.” Shayna said. “Suspended from school. What First grader get’s suspended from school.” Steph asked glancing across her desk at Mark and Glenn. “One that punches a boy and gives him a black eye for saying her hero sucks.” Shayna said with a sigh. “Wait a minute who did he say sucks?” Stephanie asked trying not to laugh. “Apparently they were on the subject of wrestling and Jimmy Johnson told Ryan Mark sucks so she hauled off and punched him. They suspended her for it.” “Okay so somebody said Mark sucks and Ryan punched him.” Stephanie said unable to hold her laughter in anymore. She knew it wasn’t funny she just couldn’t help it. The thought of Ryan defending Marks honor was. “Steph it’s not funny she’s out of control she barely speaks to me and when she does it’s to tell me she hates me, and now she’s fighting in school.” “Shay honey calm down, have you had her going to the school councelor.” “Yeah…She say’s that she angry cause I left Mark. She’s going around telling everyone he’s her dad and that nothing is going to change it.” “Shay I think you need to talk to Mark about this. This doesn’t sound good.” Steph said gently. “I know…I just don’t know what I’d say.” “Hold on a second.” Steph said handing Mark the phone. “Shay what’s going on with Ryan?” He asked his voice filled with concern. “Mark…” Shayna whispered she’d had no idea Mark would be in Stephanie’s office when she’d called. “Shay what is going on?” Mark repeated. Shayna relayed the whole sordid mess with Ryan by the time she was done she was in tears. “Honey what can I do to help.” “Short of you coming here and letting her come live with you…nothing.” Shayna said joking. “I’m coming there.” Mark said seriously. “Mark NO it’ll only make matters worse…I think.” She said unsure of anything these days. “Shay…somebody has to do something if you can’t get through to her maybe I can.” “Mark…” “Shay…just stop alright, I love those kids just like they were my own. I’m not going to let you talk me out of this…I’m coming and that’s final.” Mark said handing the phone back to Stephanie. Stephanie nodded her permission and he left Glenn following. “Mark what are you going to do?” Glenn asked. “I’m going to do what I should of done a long time ago.” Mark said. “And that is…” “I’m going to get my girlfriend and our kid’s back. Ryan and Sam may not be mine biologically but damn it, I love them as if they were I love Shay more than I ever thought it possible to love someone.” “Now that’s the Mark Callaway I know and love. About time he showed back up.” Glenn said slapping him on the back as they walked out of the arena. “Steph that was so uncalled for.” Shayna said pissed that her cousin had put Mark on the phone. “Hey somebody had to do something you obviously are still being to pigheaded to do it yourself.” Steph said defending herself. “Stephanie if this blows up in my face I swear to god I will make you rue the day you were born.” Shay said quietly walking into the house. “Mark loves you and he loves those kid’s if something is going on that involves him he has a right to know.” “I know your right…It’s just…” “It’s what Shay, the fact that you miss him, you love him still, or is it the fact that you were wrong for walking away that’s bothering you.” “I did what I thought was best for everyone involved.” “No Shay you did what your pride thought was best. Shayna knew that working things out with Mark was what would be best for everyone concerned. I’m still a little pissed that you left me in the lurch with both divisions.” “I know and I’m sorry…What can I do to make it up to you?” “Fix things with Mark when he get’s there and come back to work. Shane’s moving to headquarters. I need you. We work so well together.” Stephanie said seriously. “I can’t Ryan has school.” “So we hire a teacher and we home school her. At least think about it. I mean you don’t even have to work things out with Mark…you loved working this job admit it.” “I did your right.” “And at least the girls will be able to see Mark, so that fixes your problem with them missing him.” “When did you become so smart?” “Honey I always been smart. You just never listen to logic.” Stephanie said laughing. “Sometimes I think your right.” “Listen call me after Mark gets there and let me know what you decide.” “I will Steph…Thanks for butting in where you didn’t belong.” Shayna said laughing for the first time in a long while. “Your more than welcome, just call me anytime.” “Bye Brat.” Shayna said hanging up the phone. Stephanie hung up the phone and sat back in her chair with a grin on her face. She could almost guarantee Shay would be back with the company before the month was out. ~Chapter 14~ Mark drove straight to Shayna’s from the airport; he wasn’t going to waste anytime. Pulling into the driveway he could see Shayna silhouetted in the window. Getting out of the rental he walked up onto the porch and straight inside without knocking. “Shut up and sit down,” He ordered when Shayna protested. “Ryan…Get your little princess butt down here.” Mark bellowed from the bottom of the stairs. “Marky” They both girls screamed as they came barreling down the stairs hurtling themselves into his arms. “I knew you’d come” Ryan whispered clinging to him. Mark dropped a kiss on each one of their upturned faces as he carried them both over to the couch handing Sam over to Shayna. Setting Ryan in front of him on her feet he sat down next to Shayna. “I understand there was problem at school.” Mark said seriously. “Sort of, it wasn’t to serious though.” Ryan whispered. “I think hitting someone is very serious.” “But Marky he said you sucked.” “Ryan…just because somebody say’s something doesn’t mean it’s true. Not everyone in this world is going to like me or think I’m a good wrestler.” “He made me mad.” “I understand that honey but fighting is never an option, there are other way’s of handling things. Did you tell him you were sorry?” Mark asked gently. “NO and I aint going to either.” Ryan said crossing her arms over her chest. “Excuse me young lady.” Mark said raising an eyebrow. “I mean no not yet.” Ryan said looking down at her feet. “I also understand you’ve been giving your mother a hard time since you came back home.” “I hate her…she made you go away.” Ryan said glaring at her mother. “Ryan, I don’t want to hear talk like that. Your mother loves you and what happened between her and I have nothing to do with you. It doesn’t change the fact that I love the three of you very much.” Mark said firmly. “But she wouldn’t let us see you, she wouldn’t let us call you and she’s mean.” Ryan said pouting. “Listen to me…Sometimes two people love each other but still have a difference of opinions on things and they need to take some time to think things through. You let your mom and I work those things out and be a good girl. I fully expect you to call this Jimmy boy tomorrow and apologize; as a matter of fact we’ll take a trip up to the school so you can do it in person.” Mark said giving her a hug. “Do I have to?” Ryan asked scrunching up her face. “Yes” Both Shayna and Mark said at the same time. “Alright..” Ryan grumbled. “Come on Sami let’s let Mommy and Marky kiss and make up.” Shayna watched the girls walk up stairs; feeling the need to compose herself before talking to Mark she followed them. “I’ll be right back, let me put them to bed and then we can talk.” Shayna whispered stopping at the top. Mark nodded as she continued. He had no idea what he was going to say to get her back. But he was not beneath groveling if that is what it took. He’d been miserable without her over the last six months. His divorce had been final for three months and he’d been tempted several times to come to her. But his pride and anger had stopped him. He hadn’t been angry at her, but at himself for letting her walk away. Shayna tucked Samantha into bed and kissed her goodnight. “Momma is Marky going to stay this time?” She asked quietly. “I don’t know baby.” Shayna said tears filling her eyes. “Will you ask him to mommy? Please. I love Marky.” “We’ll see honey, I’ m not promising anything.” “Okay” Samantha said rolling over and hugging her teddy bear. Shay walked into Ryan’s room to hear her finishing up her prayers, “God bless Mommy, Sami and Marky…Jesus please let Marky stay and be my daddy. We need him and Mommy is so sad when he’s not around. I’ll be extra good if you do. I’m sorry for being bad and letting you down.” Shayna stepped further into the room, picking up Ryan she held her close as she fought back tears. “Ry, honey you didn’t let Jesus down sweetheart. We all make mistakes and that is why Jesus died on the cross, so we’d be forgiven. Mommy made a mistake by not considering your feelings when we came home. Mommy is going to try her best to fix it.” Shayna said kissing her forehead. “You mean it mommy you’re going to try to fix things with Marky.” “I’m going to try my best. I need you to stay in bed like a big girl. So I can talk to him alright.” “I will mommy, I love you” Ryan said climbing under the covers and closing her eyes tightly. A huge smile plastered on her face. Shayna got up from the bed and walked back downstairs, wiping the tears from her eyes. “You alright?” Mark asked seeing her come down stairs. “Yeah” she said wrapping her arms around her middle. “Are you sure, I know this hasn’t been easy on you. I take full responsibility for everything that has happened.” Mark said wanting to reach out and pull her into his arms. “It’s not your fault Mark. I did this.” She whispered her back turned to him. “No Shay hear me out…I should have stood beside you, I should have supported you and been the one to train you. Instead I did nothing but give you a hard time. All you were trying to do is help me. I know Sara would have never signed those papers if she hadn’t been forced to. She would have dragged it out for years. I don’t blame you for packing up and coming home. I know if I would have tried a little harder I could have made you stay. Instead I was a coward and let the best thing that ever happened to me walk out of my life. The last six months have been hell…I won’t blame you if you tell me to get the hell out of your house and never come back, just know that for the rest of my life I will love you and that anytime you or the girls need me I’ll come running.” Shayna bit her lip as she listened to him. “Just like you did today. We needed you and you came running.” Shay said turning to face him. “I screwed up big time Shay, I should have fought for you, for us…I love you Shay more then I ever thought possible. I was so afraid loving you and what it meant that I lost you because of it. I hurt you…I hurt the girls…all because my stubborn pride wouldn’t let me face the fact that the only reason you stepped into that ring with my ex wife was so that I could be free of her and we could be together.” “It’s like you said Mark, it was your life and your wife…I should have let you handle it. Instead I tried to take over, maybe that’s why my first marriage failed. I’m a control freak. If I’m not in control then I’m not happy. If I’m not happy then everyone around me better be fucking miserable right along with me.” Shayna said turning to look at him. “No Shayna…that’s not how I see it.” “Mark look at what I did to my kid’s. Poor Samantha…the only father figures he remembers is you…and Ryan she adores you. She’s upstairs saying her prayers asking jesus to make you stay. So that she’ll have a real family again…” Shayna said bursting into tears. “I’m the one that fucked up Mark not you.” Mark walked across the room and gripped Shayna by the shoulders. “I’m not letting you take the blame for this. I love you Shay and I would die to have another chance with you. I’d cut off my right arm for the chance to hold you just one more time…Hell I’d give up my hearing just to hear you say you love me still. I need you Shay…I’m only half a man without you and I’m not so sure your complete without me either. We are like to halves of the same person. We complete each other.” Mark whispered looking into her deep blue eyes. “I do still love you, but what if…” Shay said stopping when Mark brushed her lips with his thumb. “What if the world ended tomorrow at least we’d have right here and now. Baby, you can’t keep wondering what if…we can’t predict the future. All I know is that my future looks pretty grim without you and the girls in it.” “Do you think we honestly have a chance…I mean after everything that has been said and done?” She whispered her heart pounding wildly. “I know we do, we just have to stand together. If we do anything Is possible.” Shayna closed her eyes. Just hearing him say it made her believe him. “Steph offered me my job back. She said we could hire a teacher for Ryan and home school her. Then we could all be together.” Mark crushed her against him. “Is that a yes?” he asked his heart in his throat. “If you’ll have us.” Shayna said smiling up at him. “On one condition.” “What’s that?” “That you marry me…so we’ll always be together and we’ll be a true family.” “I think we’ve just made two little girls very happy.” She said hearing a squeal of delight come from hallway upstairs. “Say YES, mommy.” Ryan called down. “Yeah say yes mommy.” Mark said grinning. “Yes Mark, I would love to marry you.” The End
