Friendly Takeover
Written By Lady Cat
Vince sat in his office at Titan Towers. This would be his last day as owner of the WWF. He had not wanted to sell the company, but his failing health found it harder and harder for him to keep up with the ever growing demands of running the company. Linda, his wife, had declined, saying she preferred to stay at home and take care of him. They had had two children, Shane and Stephanie. Shane had been Vince's best hope to take over, but his excessive spending habits would have ruined the company in no time. Stephanie was married with two children and did not have the time to devote to running it.
As he sat there, he reflected back on how the company had first started. He had grown up in the wrestling business; his father owning a small wrestling company in New York state. He had taken it from nothing and made it into a top rated company. At one time he had the chance to expand, but declined, preferring the local steady market.
Vince started looking into the wrestling market as a whole. Having travelled around the country, Vince saw the potential as wrestling was becoming popular again. He knew his father had some of the best in the business, but staying in the local area was stifling their potential. Vince approached his father with the idea that they needed more exposure to talent outside the confines of the state. His father refused. Vince went back to his house and decided he would set up his own wrestling company. He talked it over with his wife. At first she hesitated, but he finally convinced her it would work out.
Setting up the business in the basement of their house, Vince began looking at the wrestling talent at one of the local schools not far from there. Vince was pretty good at judging up and coming talent. After looking them over, he talked to five who had caught his eye and asked would they like to be the basis of a new company he had formed - the World Wrestling Federation.
It was tough at first. Money was slow in coming because of salaries and travelling expenses. There were times when they were lucky to break even. Linda was a big help as she kept up the books, logging every expense, looking over the costs to see where they could cut corners. It took a while, but the company finally began making a profit and steadily grew. Soon they were adding more wrestlers. By now the company was known all over the northeast and parts of the mid-Atlantic.
Vince knew this was not enough. He wanted more. Through sound investments, Vince was able to bring in more wrestlers and book them in matches with other federations. Over the years, as the state of wrestling changed, so did Vince. Instead of just straight wrestling, he began using story lines to keep the fans interested. Finally, he came up with a TV wrestling show that would come on once a week. The major networks weren't interested as it did not generate enough big money to make it worth their while. Finally, a cable company took the chance and put it on its schedule. Gradually the show became a hit, with ratings in the top ten every week, outdoing the more well-established network shows.
His thoughts came back to the present. It had taken a lot of years and hard work to get to where he was. Now his health began to decline. He wanted the concept he had started to keep going. He had heard of CB Corporation for a number of years. It had started out as a local TV station, showing mainly programming that none of the other networks would show, including his wrestling show. He admired the owner, CB McCall, although he had never met the person. He had some of his people check out the company, finding it to be a forward thinking company, willing to change and expand. Through sound investments the company had expanded, owning hundreds of stations around the country, making it worth billions.
When first approached by the company's management about a possible merger, Vince at first refused. He felt the WWF didn't need to be in a partnership while doing so well on its own. As his health declined, the offer first made by CB Corporation began to sound better as he knew Shane could not be trusted to keep the company at the present level. He thought back to the phone call he had made, telling them he would agree to the merger.
Two days later, a young lady came in bringing a letter identifying who she was, Kris Williams. She was there to look over the company records and personnel files, and would report her findings to the head of the company. Vince took her to the accounting department and told the employees to bring out all expense and profit reports on the company. He also informed personnel that she would be looking over the files of those who worked there. Vince then left, saying that if she needed anything to ask. What he didn't know was that the young woman was CB McCall herself.
------------------------------------------ CB McCall prided herself on good business sense. When her father had started the company, she was the one who took care of the books and kept up the personnel files. When her father had died, she took over.
CB's real name was Cynthia Baynes McCall, but preferred to be called CB. She was average height, dark hair, light eyes, and took nothing from no one. Most men were intimidated by her confidence in herself, finding that she was nobody's fool. CB had learned the hard way early in life not to trust too many people. Her busy schedule had left her little time for a personal life. She did though have some hobbies, cooking and music being two of them. She had also studied the martial arts, having earned a first degree black belt.
Although the family never talked about it much, her uncle had gone into wrestling, having done well, but never coming to visit as he knew everyone disapproved. CB had grown up wondering why. As a teenager she had decided to see for herself what all the fuss was about. She snuck out of the house one night and went to see some matches at the local arena. She watched from a back row. What she saw she liked and found herself interested in it.
CB had heard of the WWF for quite some time. When her father was still alive, he had refused to show any form of wrestling. But after she took over, she put it on her schedule, thinking back to her teenage days and how much she had enjoyed watching her first match. She would watch the WWF when she had time, liking the way it was presented.
While travelling, she happened to meet and make friends with one of the people who worked at the WWF and who kept her up to date on what was happening. When she found out Vince was on the verge of retiring because of ill health, she thought now was the time to try for a merger. At first, she had been refused, but a few months later received a letter stating they were interested, having checked out the company. She wrote back to say that someone would be there to check out their books and personnel files. She was going to send someone, but decided to go herself, not telling anyone who she really was.
When she arrived at Titan Towers, she was escorted to the accounting department and given all their records. It had taken her a full week to go over the accounting records. She was impressed by what she read, especially the profits from the ppv's and merchandise sales. "I have to hand it to him, Mr. McMahon knows what he's doing. Now to see what kind of personnel he has working for him."
Being on the go so much lately, she had not kept up with the wrestlers he had working for him. It was another two weeks before she was finished. She had carefully looked at each file, noting with particular interest how the wrestlers would change their characters over the years.
When she had seen what she wanted, she thanked them, saying the company would be in touch. Back at her office, she began thinking, why not see what they are really like. Watch them, talk to them, find out if they are anything like they portray. She remembered seeing a notice they were looking for people to be ring security. A smile came across her face. Why not? Her training in the martial arts had more than prepared her to handle any situation. Typing up a resume, she submitted it to the WWF. Three weeks later she received word to go for an interview with the head of their security.
Chapter 2
Jim Dotson looked at the woman standing in front of him. Her resume said she was able, but her physical stature said otherwise; the hour glass figure, eyes that seemed to look inside you. He had never thought of hiring a woman for ring security. CB would be the first.
"There are some things you need to know about the job. You will be expected to know when and how to handle the fans. One false move and the company could get sued."
"I realize that," she replied.
"You will be travelling with the wrestlers, so you will be on the road most of the year, handling odd hours and catching flights as soon as the show is over sometimes."
"I don't see a problem with that. I'm not married nor am I with anyone at the present."
Jim was still not convinced he should hire her. "Do you realize that being a woman at ringside, especially in a security uniform you may hear catcalls from some of the men."
CB smiled, mainly to herself. She was used to that. "Oh, I don't think there will be a problem with that."
Jim could think of nothing else. Extending his hand, he said, "Well, all I can say is welcome aboard, Kris. You start tonight. Be here at least an hour early so I can show you around."
CB put her hand in his. "Thank you. I'll be here." She turned and went to her hotel room. As she had time, she laid down and rested for a couple of hours.
She returned to the arena wearing the black jeans and t-shirt that she had been given earlier that day. Jim was at the entrance waiting on her. He let out a sigh. The tight outfit accentuated her shapely figure. "Wait till the guys see her," he thought. He showed her the arena and where she would be, which was near the ring steps.
Some of the wrestlers had already arrived. They saw the shapely woman walking with Jim, who took her over to where they were standing. "Hey guys. This is our new security person, Kris Williams. Kris, meet Kane, Bubba and Devon Dudley, Rikishi, and Steve Blackman."
"How do you do," she said politely.
"She'll be standing near the ring steps close to the ramp."
"Hi, Kris. Welcome to the WWF," Kane said, shaking her hand. "I think you'll like it here."
"Thank you. It's good to be here. I know I'll like it."
CB shook hands with the rest of the wrestlers, then followed Jim as he showed her around, introducing her to the staff.
Kane's brows arched as he watched her hips sway. "Damn, security sure isn't what it used to be. It's gotten a whole lot better, looking that is."
Bubba grinned, "That's the best looking security person I've ever seen. Jim should hire more like her." D'von rolled his eyes.
"Did you see how her butt was shaped? Nice and round," Rikishi commented.
"Get your mind out of the gutter," Blackman said, smiling.
All the guys laughed. They really had something to look forward to when they came out.
CB went to ringside, standing where Jim showed her. "I won't be far. I'll just be on the other side, going through the crowd. Just be ready as the wrestlers sometimes fight in the crowd."
The crowd began entering the seating area. Some of them got a good look at CB, whistling and saying lurid remarks to her. CB pretended not to hear, although she felt like punching a couple of them in the nose. Jim saw how cool she remained. Jim nodded his head, telling her she was doing fine.
Soon the matches started. Those who had arrived later were pleasantly surprised to see a woman at ringside. Mark arrived soon after the first match, already dressed in his ring attire. He was in the main match that night. He concentrated on getting ready, not hearing how some of the wrestlers talked about the new security person Jim had hired.
He prepared for his entrance to the ring. When his theme started, he revved up his Titan and rode onto the stage, stopping for a bit, then riding down the ramp and around the ring, as was his usual entrance. As he rounded the last corner, he parked in his usual spot. When he got off to go to the ring, he noticed the shapely woman in security uniform. He climbed the steps and entered the ring. He briefly looked her way as he walked around the ring, raising his arm.
CB took a good look at Mark. So this was what the American Bad Ass looked like. She remembered from his file that he was tall, but she hadn't really comprehended just how tall he was. His red hair pulled back from his face in a braid and blue bandana really made him stand out. She looked at his stature. He was a big one!
CB put her mind back on her job. She saw Jim motion for her to nonchalantly stand near his Titan so the fans couldn't touch it. She slowly moved, putting her body between the fans and the Titan. "It has to be expensive," she said to herself. She was going to have to check this out.
When his match was over, he climbed on his bike, again the brief eye contact, then he rode up the ramp, the ritual raising of his fist before going back stage. CB had watched him ride up the ramp. He did look good on it.
Chapter 3
Jim came over. "How about a drink to celebrate your first day on the job?"
"Fine. I'll go get changed. Just where do you guys go?"
"There's a bar not too far, about 3 or 4 blocks."
"I'll meet you there," she said.
CB went to the ladies locker room to change. On the way, she heard the wrestlers talking. Most of it was about her. They were saying they thought it would be best that when they fought outside the ring, they would do it on the other side. CB got an annoyed look on her face. Little did they know how well she could handle herself.
She heard a deep voice comment. "I can see you guys had a good laugh at my expense by not telling me the new security person was a woman."
"We just wanted to have some fun. No harm intended."
CB had to pass them to go to the locker room. She dropped her bag to let them know she was coming. The guys became quiet and went to see about the noise. She pretended to be busy picking up her things and not see them.
"Can we help you?" one of them asked.
CB looked up at them. "No, I can manage just fine." She went on as if she hadn't heard what they had said. She showered and changed into a blouse and jeans. She walked out the arena on her way to the bar. When she got there, CB looked around, then spied Jim, who motioned her over.
"Good job tonight, Kris."
CB sat. Kane was there as were Bubba and D'von and Rikishi. She ordered a beer. Ordinarily she would have ordered something else, but she figured this was a beer crowd. She slowly sipped the heady brew.
Mark came in and spied her sitting next to Jim and went over, grabbing a chair from one of the tables nearby.
"Kris, let me introduce you to the old man of the group. This is Mark Callaway. Mark, this is Kris Williams, our new security person."
They shook hands. "Nice to meet you," she said. She saw her hand had disappeared inside his. Mark scowled at Jim. "Watch it with the old man introduction. Don't pay any attention to him. It's just that I've been here the longest."
CB remembered looking at the date he had been hired. He had indeed been there the longest. It spoke highly of his loyalty to the organization. It seemed like forever before they let go. When they did, Mark's hand felt warm from the contact, her hand soft but firm.
CB excused herself, saying she would be right back. She went to the ladies room. Her hand felt warm still from the contact. She could tell by the way he gripped her hand he was not a pushover. "Good," she thought. "Someone who is his own person." That was what she looked for.
She came out, passing a couple of men seated at the bar. One of them grabbed her arm.
"Com'on honey, let me buy you a drink."
"I already have one at that table," pointing to where Jim and the rest were sitting.
"Aah, they won't mind."
"No, thank you." she said firmly and started to walk away.
The man grabbed her arm again. "Let me go," she said. The guys saw CB being hassled. They got up to rescue her. By that time CB had jerked her arm away, and in one motion had pinned the man's arm behind him. They could tell he was in pain. His friend got up to help. She quickly punched his nose. Letting go of the man's arm, she went over to the table. The guys sat back down when they saw what she had done.
"Are you alright?" Jim asked.
"I'm fine."
"Seems you can handle yourself," Kane said.
"Oh, I forgot to mention to you guys, she has a first degree black belt."
The whole table got quiet. CB sipped her beer, thinking to herself, "Now maybe they'll think of me as something more than just a woman." CB listened to them talk, not saying much. She stayed another hour, then said she needed to get back to the hotel as she was catching an early flight. Mark watched her leave. He got the distinct feeling there was more to her than what they saw. He had liked the way she handled herself. This was someone he wouldn't mind knowing better.
Chapter 4
CB entered her room. She went into her suitcase and pulled out a notebook. She was keeping notes on her experiences and interactions with the wrestlers while travelling with the WWF. She felt that by doing so this would help her come to know the company better. Thirty minutes later she closed the notebook and laid down. Soon she was asleep.
She flew into Philadelphia the next morning. After checking in, she went for a short walk. It had been sometime since she had been here. Walking along the avenue, her mind went back to when she had first been romantically involved ten years ago. It had become serious, even talk of marriage. Then she found him in bed with a woman whom she found out later he had been seeing all along. She had packed her suitcase and left. He tried to stop her but she punched him in his rocks, as he had called them. Well, he wouldn't be rocking anybody for a long time.
There had been a couple of others but nothing since then. She had put her whole being into the company, not bothering to become personally involved. Then a tall red-haired man came to mind. She hadn't really looked at his personal record. For all she knew, he was probably married. "Why should I care if he is nor not?" she asked herself. She shook her head, focusing her mind on business. She had planned to be with the show for six months. She felt that was enough time to get any information she needed.
She arrived an hour early as usual before the show. Everyone greeted her cordially, the men showing her a little more respect than before. CB smiled to herself. One of the lady wrestlers, Chyna, came over to her. They shook hands as they introduced themselves.
"So you're the one the guys are talking about."
"Oh? What are they saying about me?"
"A couple talked about how you handled a couple of mashers the other night, saying you are a black belt. Is that true?"
"Yes, its true."
"Glad to hear. Sometimes what these guys say around here you have to take with a grain of salt. You know how men are."
"Unfortunately I do," CB said, smiling.
She went to check the layout. This one was larger than the last. She was thinking there should be more security. She made a mental note that once she took over, one of the first things she would have Jim do is hire more security.
She grabbed a coke before going to her position. Again, she heard the catcalls from some of the men already there. CB tuned them out.
Mark was in the back, having arrived early to check for any last minute changes in the storylines. He was talking with Kane and the Dudleys', walking toward the entrance to the arena. As soon as he stepped on to the stage, he heard the catcalls and comments aimed at CB. He was amazed how she kept her cool. Of course, her uniform did little to hide her shape. He saw how it clung to her. He began rubbing his stomach as he felt a sudden warmth overtake him. He shook his head, back to business.
Chapter 5
The matches were going at a good pace. It so happened the main match of the night was Rock-Undertaker vs. The Dudleys' in a table match. All the participants made their usual entrance. Mark came out on his white Titan, riding around the ring, stopping close to where CB was. Mark gave her a long look as he got off the bike, then entered the ring.
CB again thought back to what she read in his file. He was a good man to have in the organization. It was commented that he was a leader in the locker room, well-liked by all the wrestlers. She watched the match with interest.
Rock and Mark were over-powering the Dudleys'. They had the tables set up in the ring. They were, to the fans, to put the Dudleys' through the tables and win the match. For the storyline, Rock was to accidentally bump Mark as he was about to put Devon through the table. Mark was forced to let go of Devon. Bubba put Rock out of the ring. Mark soon had the Dudleys' beaten down. He went to the rope, calling for Rock to come in. Rock was down on the floor, out of it. As he turned, the Dudleys' 3-D'd Mark through the table. When they left, Rock came back in the ring, wondering what had happened. Mark, for the fans, got the Rock by the throat and chokeslammed him through the other table. CB had winced when Mark got put through a table. She hoped he was okay.
Rock and Mark were doing some extra stuff in the ring for the fans. All evening there had been three men behind CB who had been making lurid and loud comments to her. Jim had gone over to them earlier and told them to be quiet or they would be put out. They began taunting her again. One of them decided to come over the barrier. The man shoved CB just enough to make her back up a few steps. She calmly grabbed his arm and quickly twisted it, pinning it behind his back. His two companions came over to help him. Mark saw what was happening. He climbed out of the ring and stood behind CB. The two men thought better of it and left. CB shoved the man, who left holding his arm, embarrassed that a woman had got the best of him.
"Are you okay?" Mark asked.
"I'm fine. Thank you," she said.
For a minute they looked at each other. Mark had thought about asking her to go for a drink, but thought she would turn him down. He decided to ask anyway.
"Would you mind if I bought you a beer or something?" he asked.
"That sounds good."
"I'll shower and change and meet you at the entrance."
CB wondered if she should have accepted, but she was interested in him and wanted to find out more. She went to the locker room and changed, putting her uniform in a shoulder bag. Mark quickly showered and changed, letting his hair hang loose. As he approached the entrance, he saw she was already there waiting for him.
"Do you mind riding a bike?"
"No, it should be fun."
When CB saw how good he looked with his hair hung loose, she had to take a deep breath to calm herself. Mark got on, CB climbed behind.
"Hold on tight," he said.
CB wrapped her arms tightly around his waist. They took off from the arena. Several watched the small interaction between them.
"I've never seen Mark work that fast before," Kane remarked.
"Look at what he had to work with," Rikishi said with a grin.
