THREE GLADIATORS
Written By Lady Cat
Chapter V
The general's daughter, Diana, had blossomed into a beautiful young
lady
of
16 (at that time girls were considered grown and eligible for
marriage at
16). She could have had any young man she wanted, but chose to go to
the
temple of Venus as a vestial virgin. Her father was disappointed,
wanting
to gain a son-in-law as he had no son of his own. It was a honor in
those
times to be a vestial virgin as only a select few were ever chosen.
It
also
helped to come from a very respected family.
Diana had been there only a couple of months and had made friends
ith two
of the girls, Faustina - 14 and Julia - 12. The three would be
together
constantly and sometimes would cause trouble by playing tricks on the
high
priestess, who felt like she was going to go out of her mind, but
then
would remember how she was at their age. She would admonish them,
making
them do extra chores. Eventually the tricks stopped and the girls
started
taking their duties a little more seriously.
It is now 15 years later. Diana was in position to be the next high
priestess. She had matured into a woman who could be compared to
Venus
herself in every respect. Faustina too had matured, her golden hair
setting off a heart-shaped face, big blue eyes and hour glass figure.
Julia still had her baby face, accentuated even more by her long dark
hair,
almond-shaped eyes, and a body that would remind you of a graceful
doe
when
she moved. It was a rule of the temple that they could not go into
public
unless they were in a covered van as no one was to look upon them.
In that same 15 years, Eugenius, Carus, and Marcus Aurelius had now
become
seasoned battle-hardened gladiators. Their reputation had spread far
and
wide. No one who entered the arena was able to best them. Marcus
was the
fiercest, rarely showing any mercy to an unfortunate that lost to
him.
Carus and Eugenius were as equally adept. They found their coffers
were
steadily growing, earning more money than any of the others. But,
when
they were not fighting, they were totally different, being nothing
like
they were in the arena.
The general too had grown rich over the years, and was the talk of
the
Senate and even the Emperor's court. It was rumored that he was
being
considered for a seat in the senate, a great honor, since it was Nero
himself who made the request. The general too had a change of
attitude
over the years. No more did he keep slaves at his home, preferring
to pay
those who worked for him. He told his three gladiators that they
were
free, cutting their slave bands from their wrists. The three decided
to
keep on staying in Rome as gladiators, liking the respect that was
given
them. Over the years they had earned enough money also to get a
villa of
their own, with servants to do their bidding.
