Chapter 2

Mark came back to the present. They were still a day's drive from the ranch. As he drove he looked in the rearview mirror. Both boys were asleep in the back seat. He could hardly believe they were now 7 and 5. It seemed time had flown by fast.

He had taken a left off the interstate onto a blacktop. He had known of the shortcut since his college days. He knew he would be home in less than twelve hours. As he was driving the car gave a sudden lurch. Then smoke began coming from under the hood. "Now what!" he mumbled to himself. He pulled over to the side of the road. The boys woke up. "What's wrong, daddy?" Lucas asked. 'Are we there?"

"Something is wrong with the car. Stay put. I'm going to check it out."

Mark got out and walked to the front. Lifting the hood, he checked it and saw the radiator hose had busted. "Great! Just what I need!"

Looking around he saw a house about half a mile up the road. He heard something else also - thunder. He thought maybe they could make it before it began raining. He closed the hood and went to open the back door. "The car won't run, so we'll have to walk. There's a house not far from here." Mark picked up Sean to carry him; Lucas got out. They began to walk up the road. They hadn't gotten far when the rain came pouring down. By the time they got to the farm house all three were soaked.
