Book 3 Chapter 1

Glen helped Mark up and took him outside. Mark tore from Glen and began to throw whatever he could get his hands on.

"That fuckin' bitch! She took them! I'll kill her!

Glen and one of the policemen tried to get close enough to him to calm him down, dodging whatever was being thrown. Finally he stopped and collapsed to his knees.

"Come on Mark. Let's get back. There's nothing more we can do here."

It was a long drive home. Mark looked out the window the whole trip back. Glen had tried talking to him, but found he wasn't listening. He pulled into the yard late. Everyone was on the porch waiting on them. Mara ran to the car, going to Mark's side. She opened the door. Mark just sat there.

"Mark?" She put her hand on his shoulder. For several seconds he didn't move, just sat there staring into space. Then he turned and saw her. Slowly he got out of the car, walking past everyone and into the house. He went to the boys' room and looked around, then saw their pictures. Picking them up, he sat on Lucas' bed, looking at them. He could hear them calling him to come and tuck them into bed. He closed his eyes, seeing them asleep.

Mara entered the room, watching him then went over and stood in front of him. He opened his eyes and looked up, seeing tears well up in her eyes. Mark pulled her to him, laying his head on her chest. Mara put her arms around him. He felt the tears sting his eyes, then flow down his cheeks. His body shook as sobs racked his body. Mara held him tight, her head on top of his. "They're gone!" he sobbed. The others watched for a bit, then Anna motioned for them to leave to go to the living room.

"Glen, exactly what happened?" Frank asked.

"We went to the same phone as before to wait. There were two other unmarked cars there. The phone rang. She said we were to go to an abandoned warehouse. They must have had someone watching and spotted the cars. They called to say get rid of the cops. The cops moved down the street. Mark went in while I waited.

I wondered what was taking so long. I went in and found Mark getting up, rubbing his head. There was a note on the desk. It said the boys were at Pickman's Lake. After we got there, the cops checked the cabins. We looked in the last one. No one was there, but it had been used.

There was another note. Mark picked it up, then collapsed on the bed. I read it. It said, 'Did you really expect to get them back?' It was signed Sherry.

I got Mark outside. That's when he started throwing what he could get his hands on. Finally he stopped and collapsed to his knees. Another cop and I got him in the car."

"She had no intention of returning them," Judi said. "She used them to get what she could and then took them from him, knowing that would hurt him worst of all."
