Book 3 Chapter 2

The van had been traveling for 8 hours. It had been pre-arranged that they would switch vans at a small stop just off the highway. It was late when they pulled in. "Right on time," the driver said.

"Good. Now to wake those kids up."

Sherry got out and went around to the back and opened the doors. "Okay, you two, wake up."

The boys opened their eyes. "Where are we?" Sean asked, yawning.

"Come on, get going. We don't have long."

"I want to use the bathroom."

"We don't have time."

"I got to go bad!" Sean whined.

"Quit whining!" Sherry hissed. "Go use it, but make it fast! Ted, go with them."

Ted, who was driving, took them to the restroom. Hurry up and use it! And no tricks!" Lucas dawdled as long as he could.

"Come on, hurry up!" Ted yelled impatiently.

"We're coming!" Lucas spat back.

Ted grabbed them as they came out of the stalls and took them to another van. Sherry was loading it when he brought them over. "Get the bag. It's too heavy for me to carry."

Ted put the bag in the van, then went back to the first van to make sure everything was wiped off. Sherry turned around to look at the two boys. Lucas looked at her, his eyes turning dark green in anger. "Don't look at me like that! You just as well face it. You are with me, and no one will be able to find you."

"Daddy will find us."

"You're with me now. You and your brother had just as well go back to sleep. It's a long trip to your new home." She turned around. "More like his stupid father every day. I hope the SOB drops dead."

Mara was still holding onto Mark. Soon he stopped crying. Mara tilted his head up. "I'll be okay," he said softly.

"You want me to get you something?" she asked.

"No. I just want to stay in here for a while."

Mara sat beside him. "Tell me exactly what happened."

Shaking, Mark told her. Mara held his hand. "I swear, if I ever get my hands on her.....!"

Everyone in the living room had gone silent. "Frank, I'll need to get pictures of the boys and a description of Sherry to send to every police precinct west of here," Chief Braden said.

Frank went to the boys' room. "Mark, come out and talk to the chief. We have to start looking for them. He needs a description of Sherry. He also needs a picture of the boys. I was thinking of letting him use the one you're holding."

Mark slowly got up and went to the living room. He sat on the couch and gave the picture of the boys to him. Mark gave him Sherry's description, gritting his teeth to remain calm. When he was through he let out a sigh. "What are the chances you'll be able to find them?"

"To be honest, I don't know. I know of cases where the children seemed to vanish into thin air, not to be seen for years. Then again they're found in no time. It depends on how well she is able to hide herself. There are underground organizations that help parents who kidnap their kids. If she's able to convince them, it will be tough. And with the money, she could buy her way."

Mark put his head in his hands. "I don't care how long it takes. I want them found and brought back."

"Let me ask you now. Would you be willing to go on television?"

Mark look up. "What do you mean?"

"You've seen or heard of shows where they talking about missing persons. We may have to resort to that."

"I don't care. Whatever it takes."

"I'll take this picture of the boys and her description to the station. I'll have this sent to every precinct west of here." He got up to leave.

"Thanks, Chief." Frank said, walking him to the door.

"I'm sorry this happened, Frank. We'll get them back."

Frank went back to the living room. "I don't think there's any more we can do tonight. Let's all just get some rest."
