On The Rebound

Written by Dville

Lita watched from the corner of the restaurant, where she'd been sitting for over an hour.

She'd know for a while Matt had been cheating on her. The trips home were becoming less frequent. Brief phone calls when he was on the road. She'd tried to share with him her excitement about being cleared to train again. After so long she was going to be able to get back in the ring. She was going to stop watching as her world passed her by.

After the first workout, he'd barely remembered to ask her progress. But Lita never thought he'd stoop to dating her. She rose from the bar stool, causally walking over to the table.

Lita saw the woman's eyes widen in shock. The glass she held in her hand trembling slightly as she set it on the table, before composing herself.

"How's the lobster Stephanie?"

Lita turned to see the alarm on Matt's face. All thoughts that she'd been mistaken, that it was a casual dinner between employer and employee completely gone. Lita managed not to laugh out loud when Matt tried to stammer an explanation.

Lita examined the table casually. "Lobster tails. White Zinfandel. Very nice. Even if she is loaded, I hope you're picking up the check, Matthew." Lita chided as she stood next to the table picking up his glass and drank.

"This is a business dinner." Stephanie stated firmly, trying to sound casual.

"Really? So you and Rikishi are having dinner tomorrow. Will you be greeting him at the table by letting him feel you up before you sit down? OR does only Matt get your personal attention?" Lita asked. Stephanie twisted her face angrily.

"Don't you have anything to say?" Lita demanded of Matt. "I mean I knew the business means everything to you, but I did think you were above fucking the boss to get a title shot, even if it was the lightweight." Lita admonished.

"That's not what's going on!" Matt growled loudly. When several heads at nearby table turned toward them, Matt lowered his voice.

"I earned that belt." He insisted between clenched teeth. Lita eyed Stephanie up and down, "I'm sure you did."

"So exactly how many times did you go from her bed to mine?" Lita asked her voice strained for calm.

"The weeks you BEGGED me to take you back after I caught you with Trish. Saying we belonged together, that you'd made a mistake. That the fans really wanted us back together." Lita snapped. "The nights I've sat at home alone wondering if I was ever going to be able to get in the ring. The surgery, the pain, the therapy. It explains why you haven't touched me in almost a year. All the while you were out screwing for your place with the company tramp." She announced.

"One more insult and I'll make sure you're fired." Stephanie threatens, looking smug.

Lita laughed lightly, "And what exactly will you tell Daddy dearest? That he has to fire me because your boy toy is uncomfortable. That your lovers girlfriend is in the way of your weekend get together? Speaking of which does your fiancé know you're fucking around on him?" Lita asked smugly.

"He does now."

All three at the table looked up and watched as the current heavy weight champion walked toward the table.

Lita took only one step back crossing her arms over chest, thinking the floor show the people at the surrounding tables had been trying not to watch had just gotten more interesting.

Hunter stood next to the table, barely glancing at Matt before glaring at his fiancé.

"Did you think I wouldn't find out?" he asked calmly. "You'd think after Cena you'd learn how not to get caught. Very careless." Hunter chided.

Glancing at Matt when the younger man's eyes widen in shock. "Cena?" he asked, looking at Stephanie.

"You think you're the first?" he asked the younger man. "Ask your brother." Hunter ordered, "I used to think he was the idiot brother, least he turned Princess down."

Stephanie rose from her chair, grasping Hunter's arms, "Hunter, I don't know what Lita's told you, but this isn't what you think."

Hunter smirked as he looked up at the redhead briefly.

"I'm not here because of her." He announced.

Hunter reached into his back pocket, pulling out slightly crumpled photos.

"Very careless." he repeated. Lita glanced down at the pictures scattered across the table. They were random shots of Stephanie with Matt both looking quite cozy in each other's arms in various places. Outside arenas, in the lobby of hotels, and backstage.

"Did you think no one saw you?" Hunter began. "Or did you think they wouldn't say anything because you're the boss?"

Stephanie gaped at the pictures, trying desperately to think of an excuse.

"Hunter, I . . .I can explain.

"Save it princess. I heard it all before." Hunter interrupted, walking around the table and toward the door.

Lita reached forward tipping the wine glass in front of Matt to land in his lap. Grinning when he jumped out of his chair wiping desperately at the cold liquid.

"He's all yours Steph."

Lita slipped into her jacked as she walked out the front door to see Hunter standing there. He was staring down at the gold band on his hand as he twisted it.

Lita quietly walked over to him, "You okay?" she asked. Hunter raised his head, his hands stopping the incessant twisting. Holding up his hand, "It's not real." He began, "We were wore them for the marriage angle and I just never stopped wearing it. I mean, we were going to get married, so why bother to take it off? But it was real to me." He stated quietly. "It meant something to me." He added almost to quietly to be heard.

Lita wasn't sure what to say or if she should say anything.

Hunter slowly pulled the ring from his finger looking at it only briefly, before flicking his wrist, the ring rolling on to the sidewalk before falling down a drain.

"How did you know where they'd be?" he asked, looking over at the diva. Lita twisted her lips, then shrugged, only slightly guilty about what she'd done.

"Checked the voice mail on Matt's cell phone. She left him a message to meet her here for dinner." She answered. "How did you know?" she asked.

"Torri Wilson." He answered. "She called Stacy." "Not surprising, those two share a brain cell." Lita commented. "Stacy is dating Randy." Hunter corrected. "Torri was a little intimidated to come to me directly so she asked Stacy to tell Randy." "Torri needs to be worried about if Stephanie finds . . ." "If Princess figures it out, I'll have Vince move Torri to RAW." Hunter assured her. Lita lifted her brow curiously, "Moving on to blonds?" she asked sweetly. Laughing lightly when Hunter snorted indignantly.

"Doesn't really matter how we found out does it?" she asked, shuffling her feet restlessly, her voice straining to keep the hurt from coming back. Sighing only slightly when Hunter shrugged. Both stood silently lost in their own thoughts.

"So how's your rehab going?" Hunter asked, breaking the silence. Smirking at the shock in her eyes, "I remember what it's like to sit on the sidelines and watch the world pass you by." He reminded her.

Lita nodded slightly, hearing her own thoughts echo from Hunter, "It's going well. Should be the end of summer before I get back to regular competition." She said lightly.

When she finished, a black limousine was pulling up to the curb.

"Need a ride?" Hunter asked. Lita shook her head, "I need to take a walk." She decided. "In New York City?!" Hunter questioned, lifting a brow. Shaking his head, Hunter took tugged on the sleeve of her jacket, lightly guiding her toward the limousine, nodding at the driver as he opened the door. "'Walking at night' and 'New York City' don't go together." Hunter insisted. "You can tell me about your rehab and we'll drown our sorrows." Lita lifted a brow in disbelief. Hunter shrugged, "Okay, so I just need someone to get drunk with." He admitted. Lita nodded, sliding into the backseat, "You're buying."

Good As I Was To You
(Don Schlitz/Bill Livsey)

She drove up to the restaurant where they use to dine
He was sitting at the table with someone new this time
She walked up right beside him her face did not turn red
She looked at him so calmly and this is what she said
,br> Good as I was to you is this the thanks I get?
Are all the years we shared so easy to forget?
Does this mean that you've won?
Are you finally having fun?
Is she your dream come true?
Oh, she sure looks good but she won't ever be
As good as I was to you

The room got awfully quiet and everybody stared
Finally the waiter said, "Should I bring another chair."
She said, "No. I was just leaving." but as she
walked out the door
She said, "Honey, you can have him I don't want him anymore."

Good as I was to you Is this the thanks I get?
Are all the years we shared so easy to forget?
Is this the way it's done? Looking out for
number one?
Did you think it through?
She sure looks good but she won't ever be
Good as I was to you go to lead,

Does this mean that you've won?
Are you finally having fun?
Is she your dream come true?
Oh, she sure looks good but she won't ever be
As good as I was to you
As good as I was to you
