Visit From The Gods

Chapter 4Chapter 3
"Citizens of Carthas, may I present Ammon, the strongest man in the
universe," Balder announced.
Everybody stepped back when they saw him. Never had they seen anyone
so
tall before or built like Ammon. What scared them the most was the
mask he
wore. It was black with only enough spaces for his eyes, nose, and
mouth.
When he spoke, it was with a low, raspy voice.
"I challenge any and all the strongest men in Carthas to outdo me."
There was a blacksmith who everyone knew was the strongest in the
valley.
No one had been able to outdo him. He was more than happy to accept
the
challenge. Although the blacksmith was tall, he was still dwarfed by
Ammon
in height alone.
As his shop was close by, the blacksmith had him come over and see if
he
could pick up anything in the shop. Ammon started laughing. "Isn't
there
something else? This is child's play."
The blacksmith turned red in the face. "What are you looking for
then?"
Ammon spied a draft horse near the shop. The blacksmith couldn't
believe
that Ammon could pick up a horse. Ammon got underneath and squaring
his
shoulders easily picked up the animal and put it down. The blacksmith
was
amazed. He could think of no one who could lift that much other than
Hercules himself. This was no Hercules. He conceded defeat.
Everybody
clapped.
Being shy, Frejya hung back in the crowd, looking at him. She wondered
what he looked like under the mask. Surely he wasn't that ugly to have
to
wear one.
Persephone was getting bored; wanting to go back to help with the
vineyard.
"Come on Frejya and Kali. We need to get home. There's work to do."
"Please, can't we stay to watch? There's only one more entertainer,"
said
Kali.
Persephone knew that Kali always got her way and today was no
different.
"Okay, we watch the last act."
There was a puff of smoke, then Helios appeared and took a bow and the
people clapped. He started doing his usual tricks. He was looking
around
to see who he could use. He saw Persephone looked like she would
rather be
elsewhere. He walked over to her and pulled a coin from behind her
ear.
She felt behind her ear, thinking how did he do that.
Helios looked at her with his eyes beginning to shine. He quickly
blinked,
not wanting her to see them that way, and thus give him away. He went
on
to perform his other tricks.
When they had finished, everyone put coins in a box. Persephone had
brought some with her and dropped them in the box. As the girls left
to go
home, Helios looked at her again, his eyes lighting up again.
